Notice to Mariners, No. 21 of 1884.
WAIMAKARIRI RIVER, EAST COAST, MIDDLE ISLAND.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 3rd June, 1884.
THE Waimakariri Harbour Board report that there is 10 feet of water on the bar at high-water neap, and about 11 feet 6 inches at high-water spring tides; also that the flagstaff has been removed about three-quarters of a mile down the river, and now stands on the South Spit, at the mouth of the river, exactly opposite the entrance. On it are shown the bar and tidal signals, as provided in the New Zealand Harbour Regulations, attention to which while crossing the bar is necessary. The channel up the river is now marked by buoys instead of stakes: red to be kept on the starboard and black on the port hand.

Notice to Mariners, No. 22 of 1884.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 10th June, 1884.
THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, are published for general information.
H. A. ATKINSON.
ENTRANCE TO DAINTREE RIVER.
NOTICE is hereby given that the recent freshes in the Daintree River have so altered the channel across the bar, that the leading beacons on the shore have been moved 100 feet to the southward, being in line with the fairway and the black buoys.
Vessels entering must pass the black buoy close to on the port hand. The depth of water on the bar at low-water springs is now only from 3 to 4 feet.

DISCONTINUANCE OF LIGHT AT LIGHTSHIP, BRISBANE BAR, AND EXHIBITION OF LIGHT AND TIDAL SIGNALS FROM THE PILE LIGHTHOUSE.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on or about the 31st instant, the lightship will be removed from her present position off the bar of the Brisbane River, and that the light and the tidal signals will after that time be shown from the Pile Lighthouse.
The lighthouse stands in 16 feet at low water, and 450 feet eastward from the line of leading lights through the outer cutting.
The light exhibited from the central lantern will be Dioptric of the 4th Order, occulting during the flood tide, and fixed during the ebb. It will be seen as a red light by vessels passing through the outer cutting, and between the bearings of N. by W. ½ W. and S. by E. ½ E. From S. by E. ½ E. to W.S.W. westerly it will appear as a white light. Between the bearings of W.S.W. westerly and W. by N. ½ N. northerly it will be seen as a red light. From a W. by N. ½ N. northerly to N.W. by W. ¾ W. bearing it will be again seen as a white light, and from the southward of the latter bearing the light will be obscured.
In the direction of Cowan Cowan the white light will be intensified by a sector of 45° of light—not otherwise required —condensed into a beam of 10°.
The red sector facing to the eastward covers Mud Island and the reefs, and the shoal ground to the northward, so that when passing in the white sectors, north or south of the island, vessels will be in deep water.
While within the white sector to the southward of the red light vessels will be in the fairway between St. Helena and Mud Islands, and clear of the foul ground on either hand.
The occulting light will be obscured for two seconds at intervals of ten seconds.
The tidal signals by day will be made from the W.N.W. and E.S.E. corners of the lighthouse, and at night by lights from 6th Order Dioptric apparatus shown from similar positions, the code used being as follows:—
| Day Signals. | Depth in Cutting: | Night Signals. |
|---|---|---|
| Flag, east ... ... ... | 14 | White, east. |
| Flag, west ... ... ... | 14½ | White, west. |

| Cone, east; cone, west ... | 21 | Green, east; green, west. |
| Inverted cone, east; inverted cone, west | 21½ | Two white vertical, west. |
| Ball, east; ball, west ... | 22 | White over red, west. |
| Flag, east; flag, west ... | 22½ | White over green, west. |
During the flood-tide a red flag will be kept flying from a staff on the lantern platform.
The depths given represent the draft at which a vessel may safely enter the river.
Vessels entering the river are to bring into line the leading lighthouses for crossing the bar before reaching the Pile Lighthouse, and vessels outward-bound are not to leave the line until the Pile Lighthouse is passed.
