Agricultural Statistics, Mining Notices, Private Advertisements

May 29.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 895

The complete results of the collection of agricultural statistics, made in the months of February and March last, are now published. The particulars for each provincial district are given, and a comparison with the previous year’s figures.

The table exhibits a great decrease in the acreage under each of the principal grain crops—wheat and oats, and a corresponding decline in the estimated produce. The average yield per acre for each year (which is not shown in the table) is as follows:—

Wheat. Oats.
Average Yield per Acre. Average Yield per Acre.
1884 .. .. .. 26·02 .. 35·11
1883 .. .. .. 26·28 .. 28·45

The barley crop shows an increase both in acreage and produce.

While the cultivation of the principal grain crops is less for 1884 than for 1883, the figures under the heading “Sown Grasses” for the present year will be found to show no less an increase than 412,084 acres. Oats grown for green food also show an increase, amounting to 17,554 acres. The requirement for a large turnip crop is evidenced by the important increase of 67,130 acres.

With these figures may fairly be shown the increase in the number of sheep in New Zealand at the last dates for which the information is available:—

Total estimated number of sheep in the colony, May, 1883 .. .. 13,384,075
" " " " " 1882 .. .. 12,500,597

Increase .. .. .. 883,478

The expansion of the frozen-meat trade is a subject also in connection with the development of the pastoral resources of the colony. The exports are quoted below:—

Quantity. Value.
Cwt. £
Year 1882 .. .. .. 15,244 .. 19,339
" 1883 .. .. .. 87,975 .. 118,328
March quarter, 1884 .. 57,332 .. 77,108
