The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 305 in March, against 280 in February, an increase of 25. The deaths in March were 118, against 114 in February, an increase of 4.
There were 6 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: A male of 71 died at Auckland; 2 males of 84 and 65, and a female of 78, at Wellington; a male of 76 at Christchurch; and a male of 65 at Dunedin.
The death-rates of the four boroughs for March are very similar to the rates which obtained in March of the year 1883 and for February last.
Zymotic Diseases.—The number of deaths for March was 32, against 33 for February. At Auckland the deaths from this class of disease fell in number from 19 in February to 15 in March, diarrhœa causing only 5, against 11 for the previous month.
At the other chief towns the numbers of deaths for the two months do not differ much; but scarlet fever would seem to have made its appearance in Dunedin in March, 1 death being observed from that disease.
Constitutional Diseases.—There were deaths from cancer at each of the principal towns, amounting altogether to 7 in number, of which 3 occurred at Wellington. Deaths from phthisis were not so numerous as in February.
