Notification of Vacancy of Seat in the House of Representatives for the Electoral District of Thorndon.

IN compliance with the provisions of the 61st section of “The Regulation of Elections Act, 1881,” I hereby notify that

WILLIAM HORT LEVIN, Esq.,

has resigned his seat in the House of Representatives for the Electoral District of Thorndon, and that his letter of resignation was received by me on the 24th day of March, 1884, and that the said seat is vacant by reason of such resignation.

HENRY CORRICK, of Christchurch, New Zealand, Bootmaker, has deposited at this office a specification of the said invention; and I have appointed Thursday, the 17th day of July next, at 12 o’clock noon, at this office, to hear the said application and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 2nd day of July next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to the said application, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

Civil Service Literary Prize, 1883.

Office of the Civil Service Examination Board,
Wellington, 31st March, 1884.

THREE essays on “Pauperism, and the Duty of the State in regard thereto in the Colonies,” were received under the signatures “Pakeha Maori,” “Mamillius,” and “Humanitate.”

None of these essays appeared to the Examiners to be deserving of a prize.

The Board, therefore, having determined not to award a prize, destroyed the envelopes containing the names of the writers without opening them.
