NOTES FOR OCTOBER, 1883.

Auckland.—Very showery weather, with only a few fine days; maximum rainfall on 30th, 1·19 in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and stormy from 11th to 14th from latter quarter; hail on 12th and 13th; fog on 10th.

Wellington.—Up to 9th fine, with moderate N.W. and N.E. winds; on night of 9th changed to S.E., with heavy rainfall, and continued showery and squally from S.E. and N.W. up to 23rd; stormy on 12th and 13th, with hail and slight snow on 13th; on 16th gale from N.W., without rain, also on 17th and 18th; very wet on 19th from S.E., with strong wind at night; 1·42 in. rain recorded on 20th, the maximum for month; from 24th to 28th fine; 29th, stormy from N.W., and heavy rain at night; remainder fine.

Lincoln.—Showery during middle of month, but small total rainfall, the maximum recorded on 12th, ·30 in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and at times strong; thunder on 30th; hail on 13th.

Dunedin.—Fine up to 10th, then cold and wind from S.W. to 14th, and showery; changeable until end of month; maximum rain recorded on 27th, ·36 in.; snow on 13th; prevailing wind from S.W., and strong on 11th, 13th, 14th, and 15th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Rainfall in North in excess of average, but in South less; the temperature generally under the average; unseasonable weather.

NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1883.

Auckland.—Fine up to 9th, then generally showery to end of month; maximum rainfall recorded on 11th, ·66 in.; wind variable, strong on 10th and 11th from N.E., otherwise moderate; 5 days of thunder.

Wellington.—Fine first two days, S.E. wind; 3rd and 4th showery, and heavy rainfall on 4th and gale at night from S.E.; 1·1 in. rain recorded on 5th; from 5th to 12th fine, with moderate wind, chiefly southerly; 13th, severe thunderstorm and heavy rain, very oppressive, wind from N.W.; thunder also on 16th; continued showery and unsettled weather, and at times squally, up to 25th, wind from N.W. and S.E.; generally fine for remainder of month, with prevailing N.W. wind.

Lincoln.—Showery during middle of month, but otherwise generally fine; maximum rainfall recorded on 17th, ·87 in.; generally N.E. and S.W. winds, and stormy on 11th from N.E., on 20th and 24th from S.W., and 29th from N.E.; thunder on 29th.

Dunedin.—Up to 20th unpleasant showery weather, then finer to end; maximum rainfall recorded on 18th, 2·67 in., and heavy fog on that date; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and moderate, except on 5th and 18th strong from N.E.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally a showery, unpleasant month; rainfall in excess and temperature below the average, and squally.

NOTES FOR DECEMBER, 1883.

Auckland.—Unpleasant showery weather, especially in early part of month; maximum rainfall on 17th, ·70 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and frequently stormy.

Wellington.—Up to 6th fine, but strong wind from N.W.; 7th to 10th also fine, but dull, from S.E.; next two days wet, and stormy from N.W. on 11th; from 13th to 19th generally fine, but strong N.W. wind, especially on 13th and 18th; remainder showery unpleasant weather, and squally from N.W. and S.W.; maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, 1·25 in.; lightening on 4th, and loud thunder on 24th; fog on 23rd.

Lincoln.—Early part showery, middle of month fine, and latter part showery; maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, 1·2 in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and frequently strong; thunder on 1st, 3rd, and 23rd; hail on 28th.

Dunedin.—Generally showery, cold weather, with prevailing S.W. wind, and stormy from that quarter on 6th, and on 10th from N.E.; maximum rainfall on 15th, 1·36 in.; thunder on 1st; hail on 4th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Most unseasonable weather, cold, showery, and squally at most places, North and South. Earthquakes recorded—at Wellington on 8th, at 9.30 p.m., slight, and at Dunedin on 18th, slight.
