The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs:—
The births in October were 299, against 251 in September, an increase of 48. The deaths in October were 120, against 110 in September, an increase of 10.

There were 10 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 68, and four females of 70, 67, and 65 (2), died at Auckland; two males of 81 and 78, and a female of 74, at Wellington; a female of 69 at Christchurch; and a male of 70 at Dunedin.

Zymotic Diseases.—The mortality at Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, for October, was very low; but whooping-cough was fatal to 4 children at the last-named town. At Auckland, however, the deaths numbered 14, amongst which are noticed 7 from whooping-cough (of children), 2 from diphtheria, and 1 from croup. Twenty per cent. of the total deaths at the four boroughs were from zymotic diseases, against 17·27 per cent. in September, and 26·45 per cent. for October, 1883.

Constitutional Diseases.—The total deaths at all towns was 22, a decrease of 5 on the number for September. The deaths from consumption fell from 16 to 12, the mortality being still serious from this cause.

Local Diseases.—The total deaths increased from 45 in September to 61 in October. At Dunedin, the increase (from 9 deaths to 26) was considerable, mostly due to the greater mortality from bronchitis and pneumonia—15 cases in October, against three for September.

Violent Deaths.—These were 3 in number, all owing to accident: a woman was killed by falling down the hatchway of a steamer; two children, aged 18 and 20 months respectively (of different families at Auckland), were poisoned by sucking wax matches.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal zymotic diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
