NOTES FOR APRIL, 1884.

Auckland.—Showery from 5th to 9th, but otherwise fine weather, with prevailing southerly wind and generally moderate strong N.E. gale on 8th and 9th, and S.W. on 10th; maximum rainfall on 7th, ·70in.; fog on 14th and 15th.

Wellington.—Fine weather up to 7th, then showery up to 10th, chiefly from S.E.; heavy rain on 8th, 1·11in. recorded on 9th, the maximum for month; remainder of month generally very fine, bright weather, with moderate, variable winds, except on 15th and 17th, when it blew hard from N.W.; slight hail on 10th and lightning on 16th; cold nights and mornings, but warm days, winds variable, and frequent calms.

Lincoln.—Fine weather with little rain, the maximum fall ·91in. on 6th; prevailing N.E. winds, and moderate.

Dunedin.—Generally very pleasant, with little wind, which prevailed from S.W.; maximum rain on 6th, ·82in.; fog on 2nd.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Fine weather during this period, rainfall below average, temperature less than average and high pressure. Earthquakes at Wellington on 11th, 6.49 p.m., sharp; 16th, 6.28 a.m., smart; 25th, 11.55 a.m., slight: at Lincoln on 11th, at 6.50 p.m.

NOTES FOR MAY, 1884.

Auckland.—Showery weather, maximum fall on 16th, 1·17in.; prevailing wind, S. and S.W., and moderate; strong N.E. gale on 15th; some cold weather experienced.

Wellington.—Generally fine to 15th, wind chiefly N.W., and strong on 8th, 13th, 14th, and 15th; strong gale on night of 14th, and heavy rain; 1·30in. recorded on 15th; showery up to 23rd, with strong S.W. wind on 20th and 21st, and heavy rain; 1·70in. recorded on 21st, the maximum for month; hail on 20th, 21st, and 22nd, remainder of month finer, but showery and cold on last two days from S.E.; prevailing N.W. wind.

Lincoln.—Middle of month rather showery; maximum rainfall on 9th, ·53in.; otherwise fine, with prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong on 8th from S.W. and 14th from N.W.; hail on 8th.

Dunedin.—Fine and pleasant from 10th to 19th, remainder cold and changeable, prevailing S.W. wind, but moderate; maximum rainfall on 28th, ·28in.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Excess of rain generally in month; temperature below average; continued high pressure at times; strong winds. Earthquakes at Wellington on 1st, 8.40 p.m. slight; 8th, at 8.30 p.m., very slight.

NOTES FOR JUNE, 1884.

Auckland.—From 1st to 7th fine, with light southerly and easterly winds; very sharp frost on the nights of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; from 8th to 20th, unsettled and showery, with N.E. gales, and rain on the 10th, 17th, and 18th; 21st, fine; 22nd, showery; 23rd and 24th, fine; from 25th to end of month, squally and showery, light S.W. wind. Barometric pressure considerably above the average of the previous seventeen years; mean temperature and rainfall a little below; maximum rain on 10th, ·84in.

Wellington.—Fine weather up to 9th, with light northerly winds; on night of 9th rain came on, and continued showery until 21st; wind N.W. and strong to 14th, and changed to S.E., and still rain until 21st; hail on 20th; remainder of month finer, but showery at intervals, wind chiefly N.W.; fog on 25th; prevailing wind, N.W.; maximum rain on 14th, 1·05in.

Lincoln.—Showery from 13th to 21st; the maximum fall on 14th ·439in.; prevailing southerly winds, and moderate; fine beginning and end of month.

Dunedin.—Middle of month showery; greatest fall of rain recorded on 14th, ·42in.; variable and light winds; frosty latter part; snow on 20th; fog on 13th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Rainfall less than average during this month; temperature about average; generally fine weather. Earthquakes at Wellington on 5th, at 3 a.m., slight, and at 12·10 p.m., slight.
