✨ Vital Statistics and Meteorological Data
Sept. 18.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE 1377
The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs:—
The births in August were 280, against 286 in July, a decrease of 6. The deaths in August were 127, against 122 in July, an increase of 5.
There were 18 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 7 males aged 78, 76, 74, 73, 71, 69, and 68, and two females of 84 and 76, died at Auckland; a male of 77, and 2 females of 88 and 65, at Wellington; 4 males of 80, 75, 72, and 68 at Christchurch; and 2 males of 87 and 68 at Dunedin.
Zymotic Diseases.—The mortality from these complaints was 19·69 per cent. of the whole for the principal boroughs. Out of the total number of deaths (25), 14 were at Auckland, 13 being attributable to whooping cough, croup, and diarrhoea.
Constitutional Diseases.—The number of deaths from phthisis fell from 21 in July to 8 in August, causing a reduction of the mortality from this class of disease from 23·77 per cent. of the whole to 14·96 per cent.
Local Diseases.—The total number of deaths was 69, an increase of 22 on the number for July. Diseases of the nervous system were fatal in 25 cases, against 10 in July.
Violent Deaths.—The number of the deaths (2) is unusually small. Both persons were adults, and killed by accidents of an ordinary kind.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal zymotic diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
