it, and with 6 and 7 fathoms close to. It lies near the

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN. -NEW HEBRIDES. -SAILING DIREC-
TIONS.
THE French corvette "D'Estrées" reports two anchorages to
the southward of Foreland: one at Revolieu, three and a half
miles S. by E. from Cape Foreland, and the other at Limbam,
five miles S. by E. from the same cape.
-
Ambrym. -The "D'Estrées" passed one night at
Rodd's Anchorage; the bottom is not good, and with winds
from the north it is necessary to put to sea. The coast of
the island appears to be safe at a distance of one and a half
miles from the shore, excepting the south point, where a bank
with depths of from two and a half to eight fathoms extends
for one and a half or two miles to seaward. It is a bank of
black sand projecting from the land; small vessels anchor on
it in fine weather. There is no water on this island. -
Pentecote or Whitsuntide Island. -The "D'Estrées"
anchored one night in Steep Cliff Bay. The bottom is bad,
and with westerly winds it would be necessary to get under
way. According to information furnished by the D'Estrees,
there is an anchorage, sheltered from the prevailing winds,
near the middle of the east coast, behind a reef. The west
coast appears safe at a distance of one and a half miles; a
landing can be made almost anywhere. Several streams fall
into the sea on the west coast. -
Aurora or Maino Island. -The coast appears safe at
a distance of a mile and a half. Several streams empty on
the west coast. -
Aoba or Leper's Island. -Shallow water extends for
about half a mile off the east coast. The "Wolverine" anchored
in four places on the north coast, and the boats could, every-
where, land easily on the sand beaches. In going from west
to east along the north coast the "D'Estrées" found four
anchorages: Daudoué, Walurigi, Langoa, and Bice Roads.
The best anchorage, according to the "Wolverine," is Bice
Road; there is a good landing place, and the natives are
friendly. -
St. Esprit Island, St. Philip's Bay. -The "D'Estrées"
took the anchorage of Tallomako, anchoring in twelve and
a half fathoms, sand bottom, on the following bearings:
