to make such change, exchange, or dedication, as the case may
be, and in such notice declare the manner and terms in which
the same is intended to be so made:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby, in excrcise
and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by
"The Public Reserves Act, 1881," aforesaid, declare my
intention to change the specific purpose of the reserve de-
scribed in the first column of the Schedule hereto to the specific
purpose set opposite such description in the second column of
the said Schedule.

Appointments in the Department of Trade and Customs.

IN pursuance of the powers delegated to the Commissioner of
Trade and Customs by His Excellency the Governor, the
following appointments have been made in the Department of
Trade and Customs:-
HENRY RICHARD SPENCE
to be Cadet at the Port of Dunedin. Appointment to date
from the 23rd October, 1882; and
EDWARD JOHN ROBINSON
to be Cadet at the Port of Wellington. Appointment to date
from the 8th November, 1882.

ENGLISH CHANNEL. - NEEDLES LIGHT.
Alteration in Character: With reference to Notice to Mari-
ners, No. 71 (368) of 1882, further information has been
received that the Needles Light has been made intermittent,
with an eclipse of three seconds duration every half minute.
Also that, the better to define the inner edge of the white
light which clears the Warden Ledge, it is proposed, from the
bearing of S.W. by W. into the land, the light shall, on or
about the 1st February, 1883, be coloured green.
Bearings magnetic and from seaward. Variation 18° 30'
westerly in 1883.
ENGLAND. - SOUTH COAST. - START POINT.
Alteration of Fog-Signal: With reference to Notice to Mari-
ners, No. 110 (615) of 1882, further information has been
received that the changes in the character of the fog-signal at
Start Point therein proposed have been effected; so that in
foggy weather it will give three blasts in quick succession every
three minutes, as follows: First blast, a high note; second blast,
a low note; and the third blast, a high note.
SOUTH AMERICA. - STRAITS OF MAGELLAN. - SANDY POINT.
Buoys marking Wreck.
With reference to Notice to Mariners, No. 101 (570) of 1882,
further information has been received that two buoys have
been placed to mark the position of the wreck of H.B.M.S.
"Doterel."
A buoy (of a temporary character), triangular in shape,
with staff and ball (painted green, 10 feet above the sea) was
placed by the "Triumph" over the wreck, with blockhouse
bearing N.W. N., 1,500 yards.
An iron buoy, square in shape, and coloured red, marked the
inner side of the wreck.
The wreck, the position of which may be known when over
it by the accumulation of kelp, with a least depth of 6
fathoms over the hull, lies on the following bearing :-
The principal lighthouse just open west-
ward of the small lighthouse ... N.W. N.
Cemetery cross ... W. N.
Sandy Point ... N. by E.
Mariners are cautioned not to anchor near the wreck.
Bearings magnetic. Variation 21° 30′ easterly in 1883.

SOUTH AMERICA. - MAGELLAN STRAITS.
SUNKEN Rock off St. Jerome Point: Information has been
received from Captain Wharton, H.B.M. surveying-vessel
"Sylvia," that, on examination, no indication of shoal-ground
was observed near the assigned position of the 3-fathom
rock, reported in 1881 as lying about 1,000 yards south-east-
ward of St. Jerome Point, between English and Crooked
Reaches, Magellan Strait, but a rocky patch was found about
one mile westward of that position, and about 1,200 yards from
the northern shore of Crooked Reach.
This rock (Anson Rock), marked by kelp, is very small in
extent, with a depth of 18 feet over it at low-water spring-tides,
and deep water around. It lies on the following bearings :-
St. Jerome Point, south-east extreme ... N. 28° E.
Merrill Point, Tilly Bay ... S. 42° E.
Cape Crosstide, west extreme ... S. 10° W.
Position: Latitude, 53° 32′ 20″ S.; longitude, 72°24′ 40″ W.
NOTE. - The south extreme of Borja Island in line with the
notch between the two summits of Cape Qued, bearing S. 78°
W., leads southward of Anson Rock.
Bearings magnetic. Variation 21° 45′ easterly in 1883.

grapher to the Admiralty, is published for general
information.

PACIFIC OCEAN. - SOUTH-WESTERN PART.
THE following information relative to Tonga, Wallis, and
Samoan Islands has been received from various authorities,
1879-1882. [All bearings are magnetic. Variation in 1883.
Tongatabu, 91° E. Uea or Wallis Island, 91° E. Samoan
Islands, 9° E.]:-
Tonga or Friendly Islands.
Nukalofa-Shoals: Captain H. Reade, of the German ship
"Confluentia," reports the existence of several shoals, having 3 to
10 feet water upon them, lying three miles west of Mallenoah
Island, or nearly in the fairway to the anchorage off Nukalofa.
Also that a patch with 1 fathom over it lies distant four
and four-tenth miles west of Mallenoah Island; it is marked
by a red buoy.
A shoal of 24 fathoms lies E.S.E. distant two miles from
Attataa Island.
A patch with 4 feet over it lies nearly midway between the
Juno Shoal and Agusta Rock; it is marked by a red buoy.
Off Mafanga Village, and about half a mile from the shore, is
a shoal of 3 fathoms, marked by a white buoy.
Amargura Island: A reef is said to extend under water half
a mile in an easterly direction from this island.
Uea or Wallis Islands.
Uea or Wallis Islands consist of one principal island and
several smaller islands and islets, surrounded by a barrier reef,
through which there is only one channel (the southern one)
available for large vessels.
Uea, the largest island, is 197 feet high near the centre, and
covered with vegetation. It is divided into three parishes, Mua
upon the south, Lano upon the north, and Matautui upon the
east. The Town of Matautui is the capital, and the residence
of the native queen.
