The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 262 in March, against 261 in February, an increase of 1. The deaths in March were 131, against 147 in
February, a decrease of 16.

There were 8 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: two males of 74 and 65 died at Auckland; a male of 80 at
Wellington; three males, two of 70 and one of 68, at Christchurch; and two males, of 72 and 65, at Dunedin.

Zymotic Diseases. These diseases caused 18 fewer deaths in March than in February, the numbers having been 52 and 70
respectively. The decrease in the deaths from dysentery and diarrhea was 10, viz., 48 in February and 38 in March; of these
38, 34 were of children under five years of age. There were not any deaths from scarlet fever in March, but there were 4 in
February. There were 3 deaths from diphtheria, 2 in Wellington, 1 in Dunedin, all of children, a cause of death that did not
appear in the preceding month.

Constitutional Diseases. There were 28 deaths from these causes in March and 19 in February. Cancer caused 7 deaths,
against 6 in February; and phthisis, 11 deaths, against 7 in February.
