NOTES FOR JULY, 1882.
Auckland. Constantly wet and stormy, chiefly from W. and S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 28th, 2.680 in.; very strong wind on
2nd and 16th from W., and on 11th from E.; thunder on 15th, 21st, and 22nd; hail on 15th, 19th, and 22nd.
Wellington. Unpleasant showery squally weather almost throughout month; strong winds on 6th from S.E., Sth, 12th, and 14th from
N.W., on 15th from S.W., and 26th and 27th from N.W.; thunder on 14th and 15th; hail on 8th and 15th; fog on 20th and 22nd; very
heavy rainfall during night of 27th, 2.9 in. recorded on 28th, causing floods and doing much damage; only a few fine days; prevailing N.W.
wind.
Lincoln.-Showery month, though rainfall about the average; the maximum fall recorded on 23rd, 46 in.; strong winds on 12th from
N.E., and 22nd and 23rd from S.W., otherwise moderate and prevailed from N.E. and S.W.
Dunedin. Fine until middle of month, when cold wet weather set in with prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and stormy on 22nd, 30th
and 31st; maximum rain recorded on 30th, 2.508 in.; snow fell on 17th, 18th, and 30th; fog on 28th.
GENERAL REMARKS. A very wet unpleasant month, with strong S.W. and W. winds, very low pressure. Earthquakes occurred at
Wellington on 24th at midnight, slight, and on 25th, early morning, slight.
NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1882.
Auckland. From 1st to 19th showery, with low barometer; 20th to 21st fine and mild, mostly cloudy, with high pressure; strong
wind on 13th from S.E. to S., and 26th from S. to S.W., otherwise moderate and variable; maximum rain on 3rd, 615 in.
Wellington. First three days tolerably fine, but dull from N.E., then almost continued wet weather up to 15th, with S.E. wind and
frequently stormy; 2.4 in. rain recorded on 14th, the maximum for month, causing floods; hail on 16th and 18th, remainder showery with
intervals of fine days; wind chiefly N.W., and stormy on 18th, 23rd, 27th, and 30th; altogether a wet unpleasant month.
Lincoln. Generally pleasant weather with light showers; the maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 60 in.; variable winds and moderate;
hail on 17th and 19th.
Dunedin. Changeable with light showers; the maximum rainfall on 19th, 18 in.; strong S.W. wind on 25th, 28th, and 29th, otherwise
moderate and prevailed from that quarter; hail on 16th; fog on 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th.
GENERAL REMARKS.--Fine generally in North and South, but at Central Station much rain and stormy weather prevailed.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1882.
Auckland. Variable weather, showery but not much rainfall; the maximum recorded on 26th, 1.160 in.; from 22nd to 28th very
stormy from S.W. and W., from which quarter the wind prevailed; violent thunder storm on 26th; hail on 24th and 25th; fog on 6th and 7th.
Wellington. Generally stormy weather, with prevailing N.W. wind; very strong wind on 6th, 7th, 8th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 25th, and 27th
from N. W., and on 9th, 15th, and 23rd from S.W.; maximum rainfall recorded on 15th, 85 in.; small total rainfall, but some heavy
showers; thunder on 25th and 26th; hail on 9th and 23rd.
Lincoln. Fine weather; very small total rainfall, the maximum recorded on 9th, 1.08 in., nearly the total fall; moderate and variable
winds; thunder on 23rd.
Dunedin. Fine during early part but showery and changeable during latter; the maximum rainfall on 9th, 418 in.; moderate winds
prevailing from S.W. and W.; on 24th squally and cold from that quarter, also snow and hail.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Stormy and wet weather with heavy showers, though total rain not excessive in the North; frequent thunder
and hail and N.W. and S.W. winds; generally fine at Southern stations.
