Thursday, the 24th day of January next, at 11 o'clock in the
forenoon, at this office, to hear the said application and all
objections thereto; and I require all persons having an
interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent to leave,
on or before the 9th day of January next, at this office,
particulars in writing of their objections to the said appli-
cation, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the
same.

Te Makarini Scholarships.

THREE Scholarships of the annual value of £35 each, to
be held at the Native College, Te Aute, Hawke's Bay,
are offered for competition to Maori or half-caste youths, on
the conditions laid down in the Regulations of the Trustees
of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund. The examination
will be held at convenient centres on the 17th and 18th of
December, 1883.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be ob-
tained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institu-
tions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary
to the Education Department.

Since the above notice was issued the Trustees have
offered an extra Junior Scholarship for competition at this
year's examination. There will therefore be two Senior and
two Junior Scholarships to be awarded.

Gold Fields Notices.

Gold-Mining Lease.—Notice of Withdrawal of Application.

Crown Lands Office,
Nelson, 8th October, 1883.

IT is hereby notified that the under-mentioned application
for a gold-mining lease has been withdrawn, and that
the ground is now open for application as if a lease of the
same had never been applied for, viz. :-

Christian Rasmussen and Frederick Roy, dated 30th April,
1883, for the Danish Crown Gold-Mining Company; 162
acres, north of and adjoining the Constitutional Gold-Mining
Lease, Stony Creek, Waimangaroa, in the Nelson South-
West Mining District.

Gold-Mining Lease to be granted.

IN conformity with the thirty-seventh section of "The
Mines Act, 1877," and with the regulations made under
that Act for the granting of leases for gold-mining purposes,
it is hereby notified that it is intended to grant a lease of
Crown lands for gold-mining purposes to the applicant
specified in the annexed Schedule, unless there shall be valid
objections against such lease.

Objections to the granting of such lease, stating the grounds
of objection, must be made in writing, and lodged with the
Warden at Arrow, on or before the 7th day of November,
1883.

Copy of the application made and plan annexed may be
seen at the Warden's Office at Arrow.

SCHEDULE.

APPLICANT: Samuel Cooper. Style under which it is
intended to conduct the business: "The Enterprise Gold-
Mining Company." 10 acres, in the Wakatipu Mining
District.

Given under my hand, at Dunedin, this fifth day of
October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
three.
