NOTES FOR APRIL, 1883.
Auckland.—Heavy rain, especially from 9th to 16th, and from 23rd to end of month; the maximum fall on 10th and 11th, 2·33
in.; thunder on 15th and 16th, and hail on 16th; prevailing wind from S. and S.W.; strong on 10th.
Wellington.—Up to 18th generally unpleasant, squally, showery weather, and stormy; on 2nd from S.W., 6th, 7th, and 13th from
N.W., and 14th and 15th from S.E.; the maximum rain recorded on 29th, ·570 in.; from 19th to 27th fine, though dull at times, and
light winds, chiefly easterly; last three days showery; fog on 27th and 28th; prevailing S.E. and N.E. winds.
Lincoln.—A wet month, except from 20th to 26th; maximum rainfall on 30th, 1·03 in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds, and strong
on 1st; hail and fog on 28th.
Dunedin.—Showery generally, but finer towards end of month; maximum rain on 1st, 2·28 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. wind, and
moderate.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally wet, unpleasant weather, with S. and S.W. winds, and low temperature.
NOTES FOR MAY, 1883.
Auckland.—Heavy rainfall, especially during the middle and latter part of month; maximum rainfall on 12th, 2·01 in.; intervals
of fine weather; prevailing S.E. and W. winds; stormy on 24th from N.E.; thunder on 6th, 7th, 25th, and 29th; hail on 25th; fog
on 9th.
Wellington.—Showery up to 7th; then three dull days, and from 11th to 13th heavy rain, 1·95 in. recorded on 13th, the maxi-
mum fall; winds chiefly southerly; from 14th to 21st fine, with N. winds; 22nd to 28th showery; at times heavy rain and unpleasant
weather; wind N.W.; remainder of month fine; strong S.E. gale night of 12th, with rain, also on 13th; strong N.W. wind on night
of 25th, and strong gusts same quarter on 26th, and showery; very low barometer on 28th, 29·054, and heavy rain; prevailing N.W.
winds; fog 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
Lincoln.—Showery, but moderate rainfall; some pleasant weather; prevailing N. and N.E. winds and moderate; maximum rain
recorded on 1st, ·82 in.; fog on 16th and 24th.
Dunedin.—Showery early and latter part, but moderate total rain; the maximum fall on 5th, ·500 in.; light, variable winds;
fog on 25th and 26th; strong S.W. on 13th.
GENERAL REMARKS.—In North rain in excess, but moderate in South; moderate winds, and temperature above the average.
NOTES FOR JUNE, 1883.
Auckland.—Showery early and end of month, but fine otherwise; N.E. gale on 24th and 25th, but wind prevailed from S. and
S.W., and moderate; maximum rain on 25th; fog on 5th.
Wellington.—Fine up to 10th, with moderate winds, chiefly from S.E.; on night of 10th changed to S.W., with hail and lightning
and slight rain; 11th and 12th cold S.W., but fine; night of 13th gale from S.W., with rain and hail, and 14th showery and squally
same quarter; 15th to 23rd generally fine, but strong N.W. wind on 18th and 19th; night of 24th strong N.W. wind and heavy rain;
·86 in. rain recorded on 25th, the maximum for the month; fine then until night of 30th, when it changed to S.E. and heavy rain;
prevailing N.W. wind; small total rainfall.
Lincoln.—A few light showers; maximum rainfall on 14th, ·32 in.; fine, bright, cold weather generally; prevailing N. and N.E.
winds and moderate, except strong on 14th, S.W., and 24th, N.; fog on 22nd.
Dunedin.—Slight showers up to middle of month, but otherwise fine weather; maximum rain on 12th, ·36 in.; prevailing S.W.
and W. wind, but moderate, except strong on 9th; snow on 10th and 11th; hail on 11th.
GENERAL REMARKS.—On the whole fine for time of year, with little rain, and temperature above average; strong winds at central
station from westward, with hail and showers, and squally.
