Notice to Mariners, No. 32 of 1883.

AUCKLAND ISLANDS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 20th September, 1883.
THE following remarks on the Auckland Islands, ex-
tracted from reports made by Captain J. B. Greig, of
the Government schooner "Kekeno," are published for
general information.
H. A. ATKINSON.

Carnley Harbour stands foremost among all the anchoring
places in the Auckland Group as a dangerous and difficult
place for sailing vessels either to enter or leave. The entrance
is exposed to the swell of the Southern Ocean, with an out-
going current; the land on both sides is high and precipitous;
and when the wind is not blowing either direct in or out it
often comes from all quarters in violent gusts. Within the
entrance there is 50 fathoms, and no anchorage for six miles.
Above the Figure-of-8 Island good anchorage will be found
in 4 fathoms, where firewood can easily be had, and the
best water on the Islands.

Musgrave Inlet. The land on both sides of this inlet is
high, with no outlying points to break off the violence of the
wind or give shelter. At the head of the inlet there are
three deep gorges, which draw the wind from various
directions, causing gusts and whirlwinds of great strength,
and making it unsafe even for vessels at anchor.

Passage inside Ewing and Dundas Islands.-Sailing
through this passage, with both leads going, found the depth
to vary for the most part in the clear water from 7 to 10
fathoms. The several kelp patches were sounded in the
boat, but from the density of the kelp great difficulty was
experienced, and the sounding cannot be considered com-
plete. The least water found was 1 fathom, with the
westernmost point of Ewing Island, bearing East, distant 24
cables; and on another patch, with Dundas Island bearing
N. by E. E., distant 6 cables, 31 fathoms was found.
While the tide runs strong the kelp runs under, leaving
ripples instead; and, until further examined, this passage
cannot be recommended for large vessels, and if taken by
small craft care should be taken to keep clear of the kelp or
ripples.

Notice to Mariners, No. 33 of 1883.

Secretary of the Local Marine Board, Newcastle, New
South Wales, and the Portmaster, Brisbane, are published

H. A. ATKINSON.

REMOVAL OF THE FLOATING POWDER MAGAZINE.

ON and after the 1st October next the two red lights shown
on board the "Lady Alicia" will be discontinued, and the
same two lights will be hoisted from sunset to sunrise on

the position of the black buoy, which will also be removed.
During foggy weather a bell will be sounded at short intervals
on board the light-ship.
By order.

Newcastle, 15th September, 1883.

SHOAL IN EDGECOMBE BAY.
NOTICE is hereby given that a shoal upon which the s.s.
"Chyebassa" touched when in Edgecombe Bay has been
examined and found to be about a quarter of a mile in
extent, to be composed of coral, shells, and boulders, and to
have not more than 13 feet of water over it at low water.
It lies in the following position, and is a danger to vessels
going to the anchorage off Hope Island: North end of
Gloucester Island, N.E. N.; Peak of Ben Lomond, S.E. by
E. E. easterly; West extreme Middle Island, N. E.
G. P. HEATH, Commander R.N.,
Portmaster.

Brisbane, 6th September, 1883.

Notice to Mariners, No. 34 of 1883.

HOKIANGA BAR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 25th September, 1883.
CAPTAIN GREY, of the Government steamer "Stella,"
reports that the depth of water in both channels over
the bar is now less than it was when the entrance to this
harbour was surveyed in 1878; the North channel having
only 16 feet two hours from high water, and the South
channel 15 feet one hour from high water. The positions of
the two channels have also slightly changed, the North one
having gone a little southerly, and the South one a little
northerly. Masters of vessels are therefore cautioned against
disregarding the signals given by the signalman on the South
Head.
H. A. ATKINSON.
