The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 247 in October, against 238 in September, an increase of 9.
The deaths in October were 117, against 100 in September, an increase of 17.
There were 6 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: three males of 88, 70, and 69 died at Wellington; a male of 77 at Christchurch; and a male of 67 and female of 67 at Dunedin.
The mortality in Wellington of children under 5 years of age was exceptionally great in October, there having been 29 deaths of children under 5 years of age to 24 deaths of persons at 5 years and over, caused by the prevalence of measles, whooping-cough, and diseases of the respiratory organs.
Zymotic Diseases.—These diseases caused a greater mortality in October than September, the deaths having increased from 18 to 29. Measles caused 7 deaths, of which 6 occurred in Wellington, 3 being of children under 5 years of age; one death from measles occurred in Auckland. Whooping-cough caused 2 deaths—both in Wellington—both of children under 5 years. Diphtheria caused 3 deaths in Christchurch and 1 in Wellington. 2 deaths were directly attributable to intemperance,
