plans, and specifications to be submitted to the
Minister for Public Works under sections 9 and 10
of "The Roads and Bridges Construction Act, 1882,"
are published for general information.

THE following rules for the competition for the
Government Prizes, 1882, are published for
general information.

THE Sum of £800 having been voted by the General
Assembly for prizes, the amount has been divided
pro ratá amongst the Volunteer Corps, according to
the nominal strength on the 30th September, 1882,

  1. The whole sum voted having been set apart for
    prizes, no claims for marking, &c., can be entertained.
    Each district must arrange for markers at its own
    expense.

  2. A Committee, composed of the Officer Com-
    manding and not less than two senior Volunteer
    officers in each district, will divide the amounts set
    apart for their respective districts into such prizes
    as they may determine, and to be competed for at
    such ranges, &c., as they may appoint. The Com-
    missioner of Armed Constabulary will issue rules
    for the prizes apportioned to that force.

  3. The firing for these prizes must be in accordance
    with the general rules published.

  4. The competitions to take place at such times as
    may be directed by Officers Commanding districts,
    and they are to be concluded before the 31st Decem-
    ber, 1882.

  5. Returns showing the conditions under which
    the competitions took place, the names of the prize-
    winners, and the several amounts of the prizes,
    together with the full scores of all competitors, are
    to be sent to the Under-Secretary for Defence not
    later than the 15th January, 1883.

THESE shall include, —

  1. General or key plan, showing route of road
    between well-known termini, with locality of proposed
    works marked thereon; or the site of works may be
    indicated on the plan by reference to survey sections
    along any line of road. Scale: 1 mile to 1 inch.

  2. Longitudinal section of ground and road-line
    formation, with grades marked on it, and heights
    at change of grade from a datum-line, also depths of
    cuttings and banks at every chain in rough ground,
    or at every 2 or 3 chains in ground of an even
    character. This section to be in sheets, each showing
    not more than 1 mile in length. Scale: 3 chains to 1
    inch longitudinal, 30 feet to 1 inch vertical.

  3. Cross sections not more than 2 chains apart of
    all parts of the ground where the transverse inclina-
    tion of the same is more than 1 in 4; and ground of
    the latter character to be described on the longitudi-
    nal section as "sideling ground" or "level," as the
    case may be. Scale: 15 feet to 1 inch, natural.

  4. Estimates for large culverts and bridges need
    not be given in detail, but per lineal foot. The kind
    of bridge must be described as iron or wood, truss
    or plain; size of spans, as also the width of roadway,
    and its height above ordinary water-level and above
    highest flood-level.
    Full particulars of culverts must be given as to
    shape, width, height, and thickness and the material
    of which it is proposed to build them.

  5. Tracings on cloth of plans as above to be sent
    for approval. These will be kept in the Public Works
    Department as a record.
    A specimen sheet of each of such plans will be
    furnished to any local body applying for them.
