Despatch. - Exhibition of Objects of Art at Amster-
dam Exhibition.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 21st October, 1882.

THE following despatch, received from Her
Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the
Colonies, is published for general information.

THOMAS DICK.

(New Zealand-General.)
Downing Street, 16th August, 1882.
SIR,-I have the honour to transmit to you, for infor-
mation in the colony under your Government, a copy
of a letter from the Foreign Office forwarding a
copy of a note and its enclosures from Count
Bylandt, announcing that a space will be put gratui-
tously at the disposition of each country at the
Amsterdam Exhibition, for the exhibition of objects
of art of real value.

I have, &c.,
KIMBERLEY.

Governor the Hon. Sir A. H. Gordon,
G.C.M.G., &c.

Foreign Office, 4th August, 1882.
SIR,-I am directed by the Secretary of State for
Foreign Affairs to transmit to you, to be laid before
the Earl of Kimberley, a note and its enclosures from
Count Bylandt respecting the Amsterdam Exhibi-
tion.

I am, &c.,
CHARLES W. DILKE.
The Under-Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.

(Translation.)
London, 1st August, 1882.
MY LORD,-The Committee of the Exhibition
which is to take place at Amsterdam next year has
set apart for the Modern Art Section a special
building in which space, to be defined later on, will
be placed, without cost, at the disposal of each coun-
try.

Only those articles, however, which have real value
from an artistic point of view will be accepted by the
Committee.

In order therefore to prevent disappointments, the
Committee in question considers that it would be
very desirable that the different Governments should
appoint Commissions of Artists to decide if the
objects presented can be admitted to the Exhibi-
tion.

I have the honour to call your Excellency's kind
attention to this wish of the Committee, and at the
same time to enclose twelve copies of the Special Re-
gulation for the Fine Arts Section at the Amsterdam
Exhibition.

Earl Granville.
C. DE BYLANDT.
