The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 238 in December, against 245 in November, a decrease of 7.
The deaths in December were 104, against 83 in November, an increase of 21.
There were 11 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: three males aged respectively 81, 76, and 68 years, and a female
of 70, died at Auckland; a male of 86, and two females of 82 and 70, at Wellington; two males of 78 and 65, and a female of 68,
at Christchurch; and a female of 76 at Dunedin.

Zymotic Diseases. The deaths from these diseases increased in number from 18 in November to 24 in December, the
deaths from dysentery and diarrhea having caused 9 deaths in December, against 2 in November. The deaths from these causes
in December of the previous year were 20, as compared with 5 in the preceding month. Scarlatina caused 6 deaths last month,
against 8 in November: of these deaths, 4 occurred in Dunedin.

Constitutional Diseases. There were 14 deaths from these diseases in December, against 17 in November. The deaths
from cancer were 4 in December, and 2 in November. Deaths from phthisis decreased from 11 in November to 6 in December.

Local Diseases. These diseases caused 36 deaths in December, against 35 in November. Of these, the diseases of the
respiratory organs caused 5 deaths in December, against 11 in November; and diseases of the digestive system caused 4 deaths
in December, against 7 in November. Diseases of the urinary organs caused 5 deaths in December, against 2 in November.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal zymotic
diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
