Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares and
Charges in Force on the New Zealand Railways.

IN accordance with the By-laws for the New Zea-
land Railways, fixed by Orders in Council dated
the 6th January, 1881, and the 22nd September,
1881, the following scale of charges for the purposes
specified below is hereby fixed, in lieu of the classi-
fied rates at present in force, and such scale shall
come into force from and after the 1st August,
1882:-

PART IV. LOCAL RATES.
A shunting charge of 5d. per 100 feet will be
made on white-pine sawn timber, consigned to
Booth's Siding from stations north thereof.

Designation of Post Office changed.

IT is hereby notified for general information that
the designation of the Post Office in the Auck-

land Postal District, known as Whau Bridge, will,
from and after the 1st September, be changed to
AVONDALE.

CHARLES HILL PENNYCOOK, of Glasgow, Scot-
land, has deposited at this office a specification of the
said invention; and I have appointed Friday, the 29th
day of September next, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon,
at this office, to hear the said application and all objec-
tions thereto; and I require all persons having an
interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent
to leave, on or before the 25th day of September next,
at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to the said application, otherwise they will be pre-
cluded from urging the same.

PURSUANT to the provisions of an Act of the
General Assembly of New Zealand, passed in
the forty-fourth year of the reign of Her Majesty
Queen Victoria, and intituled "The Marriage Act,
1880," the following names of Officiating Ministers
within the meaning of the said Act are published for
general information :-
Church of the Province of New Zealand, commonly
called the Church of England.
The Reverend John Robinson.
Baptists.
The Reverend Alfred North.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships, to be held at the Native
College, Te Aute, Hawke's Bay, are offered by
the Trustees of the fund instituted in memory of the
late Sir Donald McLean for promoting the higher
education of Maori youths.
Two of these scholarships are open to any Maori
or half-caste whose age on the 30th November, 1882,
shall not exceed fifteen years, and who shall have
attended a Native college or school for the preceding
twelve months. The remaining scholarship is open
to any Maori or half-caste whose age on the 30th
November, 1882, shall not exceed thirteen years, and
who shall have attended a Native village school for
the preceding twelve months.
The scholarships are of the annual value of Β£35,
and are tenable for two years from the 1st January,
1883.
The examination will be held at convenient centres
on the 18th and 19th December, 1882. Candidates
must, either directly or through their teachers, send
notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to pre-
sent themselves for examination. Such notice must
be posted not later than the 31st October.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may
be obtained from teachers of Native schools and
boarding institutions, the [Secretaries to Education
Boards, or the Secretary to the Education Depart-
ment.
