The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 238 in May, against 201 in April, an increase of 37.
The deaths in May were 93, against 86 in April, an increase of 7.
There were 9 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 2 males of 67 and 76, and a female of 76, died at Auckland;
a female of 83, at Wellington; a female of 82, at Christchurch; and 3 males, one aged 86 and two aged 66, and a female of 78,
at Dunedin.
Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases amounted to 22, or 23.66 per cent. of the total deaths in May, against 25,
or 29.07, in April. In May, 1881, these deaths amounted to 29, or 29.59 per cent. Of the above 22 deaths, 6 occurred from
measles and 6 from scarlet fever—all in Auckland. There were 2 deaths, both in Auckland, from typhoid fever.
Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases caused 10 deaths in May, against 8 in April. Two deaths occurred from cancer,
and 7 from tubercular diseases, of which 4 were from phthisis.
Local Diseases.—There was a marked increase in the number of deaths from these diseases in May; the number having
been 42 in May, against 32 in April. Of these, the deaths from diseases of the organs of circulation were 9 in May, against 3 in
April; and the deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs, 10 in May, against 2 in April.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal zymotic
diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
