NOTICE is hereby given that Captain Hugh
McLellan, Chief Harbourmaster at Lyttelton,
who was Nautical Assessor on the inquiry into the
stranding of the schooner "Jessie" on the bar of the
Waimakariri River, reports that it is not safe for
vessels drawing over 6 feet 6 inches to attempt to
cross that bar, although at times, after freshes, as
great a depth as 7 feet 6 inches is found.

Gold-Mining Leases cancelled.

IT is hereby notified that His Excellency the
Governor has been pleased to pronounce the
under-mentioned gold-mining leases cancelled, and
that the ground is now open for application as if no
lease of the said ground had ever been applied for:-

Timothy McCarthy and John Curnow; 8 acres,
District of Mawheranui, Nelson South-West Gold
Fields. No. 1019.

Charles Mears and others (Try Again Gold-
Mining and Ground-Sluicing Company); 6 acres
3 roods 32 perches, District of Waitakere, Nelson
South-West Gold Fields. No. 1001.

Gold-Mining Lease to be granted.

IN conformity with the thirty-seventh section of
"The Mines Act, 1877," and with the regula-
tions made under that Act for the granting of leases
for gold-mining purposes, it is hereby notified that it
is intended to grant a lease of Crown lands for gold-
mining purposes to the applicant specified in the
annexed Schedule, unless there shall be valid objec-
tions against such lease.

Objections to the granting of such lease, stating
the grounds of objection, must be made in writing,
and lodged with the Warden at Havelock on or
before the 25th day of May, 1882.

Copy of the application made and plan annexed
may be seen at the Warden's Office at Havelock.

SCHEDULE.
APPLICANT: Arthur Harley. Style under which it
is intended to conduct the business: "Star of the
South Gold-Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods,
at Dead Horse Creek, Wakamarina, in the Wairau
and Pelorus Mining District.

Given under my hand, at Wellington, this
eighth day of May, one thousand eight
hundred and eighty-two.
