NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1882.
Auckland. Cool weather, with heavy falls of rain, the maximum on 4th, 2.30 in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 8th to 14th;
thunder on 4th and 8th.
Wellington.-First few days fine; showery on 3rd, with thunder; then fine but stormy from N.W. to 9th, occasional rain; fine from
S.E. from 10th to 16th; then stormy to 22nd, with rain; 1.25 in. recorded on 20th, maximum for month; generally fine remainder of
month, though frequently strong N.W. wind.
Lincoln. Showery, except latter part; 2.20 in. recorded on 21st, maximum for month; prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds, and strong
on 27th and 28th from latter quarter; thunder on 18th.
Dunedin.-Showery weather prevailed, the maximum fall being 1.34 in. on 22nd; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and stormy on 23rd
from latter.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Fine beginning and end, but wet middle of month; maximum rain on 9th, 64 in.; prevailing S.W. and
N.W. winds, and often strong.
GENERAL REMARKS.-A wet month, with strong S.W. and N.W. winds; temperature generally lower than the average. Earthquakes
at Wellington, on 9th, at 2.20 a.m., and on 17th, at 10.45 p.m., slight.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY, 1882.
Auckland. Generally fine and strong at commencement of month, then light, chiefly from S.W. and W.; maximum rain on 28th,
8.45 in.; fog on 9th and 24th.
Wellington. Generally fine and pleasant throughout; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 2nd, 820 in.; prevailing N.W. wind,
and stormy from that quarter on 6th, 7th, 14th, and 18th; a few pleasant cool S.E. days; thunder on 21st, and lightning on night of 11th.
Lincoln. Fine weather with moderate N.E. and S.W. winds, except on 23rd, when strong from S.W.; maximum rainfall on 9th, 19 in.;
thunder on 8th and 11th; slight hail on 8th.
Dunedin. Showery and dull, except towards the end of month; maximum rainfall on 1st, 1.39 in.; moderate winds prevailed from
S.W. and W.; fog on 28th.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Frequent showers, but no very heavy falls, the maximum recorded on 20th, 72 in.; strong W. wind
on 22nd, but otherwise moderate, and generally from S.W. and N.W.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Fine weather except in the south, when the rain was rather in excess; occasional strong winds from N.W. and
S.W., and at times thunder. Earthquakes: At Wellington on 1st, at 2.20 p.m., slight, and at 3.8 p.m., sharp; on 20th, very slight, about
midnight; on 21st, at 6.30 a.m., slight. At Lincoln, on 1st, slight, at 3.5 p.m.

NOTES FOR MARCH, 1882.
Auckland.-Heavy rain at commencement, followed by excessive damp heat, then strong E. and N.E. gales and unsettled weather; very
cloudy; maximum rain on 2nd, 2.435 in.; dense mist on 1st; prevailing winds N. by N.E. to E.
Wellington. Up to 7th dull wet weather; wind N.E. and N.W., and close; 1.90 in. rain recorded on 4th, the maximum for month;
from 8th to 16th very pleasant from S.E. and N.E.; from 17th to 23rd strong N.W. wind, and at times showers of rain; remainder of
month fine and generally cool; prevailing S.E. and N.W. winds.
Lincoln. Very slight rainfall, and fine pleasant weather, with moderate N.E. and S.W. winds; the maximum rain on 6th, 43 in.
Dunedin. Showery and close weather; maximum rainfall on 5th, 90 in.; light variable winds; thunder on 4th; fog on 5th and 7th.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Wet close weather prevailed; wind moderate, and chiefly N.E. Earthquake at Lincoln on 22nd, at 9.10 a.m.,
slight.
