exhibited from a lighthouse on Fort Point, George-
town.
The light is a fixed red light, elevated 60 feet above
the sea, and should be visible in clear weather through
an arc of 202 degrees, or between the bearings of
S.S.E. through W. to N., from a distance of ten
miles; consequently the light is not visible in the
South Channel below Jerajah Island.
The lighthouse is situated on the north-east bastion
of Fort Cornwallis. It is an iron structure, painted
white, and has an overhanging gallery round the light-
room.
The illuminating apparatus is dioptric, or by lenses
of the fourth order.
Position: Lat. 5º 24′ 30″ N., long. 100° 20′ 10″ E.
(Admiralty chart).
Bearings are magnetic, and from seaward. Varia-
tion, 2º 35' easterly in 1882.

SOUTH-EAST COAST, CAPE BANKS, CARPENTER
Rocks.
THE Marine Board hereby give notice that, on or
about the 1st January, 1883, a revolving light of the
second order will be exhibited from a lighthouse to
be erected on the mainland, adjacent to the Carpenter
Rocks, near Cape Banks, south-east coast of this
province.

TIPARA BAY, SPENCER GULF.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the night
of the 16th January, 1882, a bright white light will
be exhibited from the end of the Moonta Bay Jetty,
and will be visible in clear weather from a vessel's
deck at a distance of four miles.

SPENCER GULF, LOWLY POINT.
THE Marine Board hereby give notice that, on or
about the 1st December, 1882, a revolving light of
the third order will be exhibited from a tower to be
erected on Lowly Point, Spencer Gulf.

ALTERATION OF LIGHT, CAPE NORTHUMBERLAND.
REFERRING to Notice to Mariners, No. 1 of 1881,
dated the 11th January, 1881, mariners are now
hereby informed that, on and after the night of the
1st May, 1882, a revolving light of the first order,
showing a bright flash every sixty seconds, will be
exhibited from a new light-tower, erected on a knoll,
distant 19 chains to the eastward of the old light-
house.
The focal plane is 154 feet above low-water mark,
and the light should be observed from a vessel's deck
in clear weather at a distance of twenty miles, and
will be visible all round the sea-horizon.
The tower and cottages are painted white, and are
conspicuous objects from seaward.

CLARENCE STRAITS, POINT CHARLES, NORTHERN
TERRITORY.
NOTICE is hereby given that a wooden pyramidal
beacon has been erected on Point Charles for the
guidance of mariners.
It is 41 feet high, 20 feet at the base, and 8 feet
6 inches at the apex, having 20 feet from apex down-
wards covered with galvanized iron, and painted
white.

SPENCER GULF, EASTERN SHOAL LIGHTSHIP.
THE Marine Board hereby give notice that, on or
about the 1st December, 1882, the lightship at pre-
sent stationed to the westward of the Eastern Shoal,
Spencer Gulf, will be removed.

THE following Notice with reference to the esta-
blishment of a telegraph and signal station at
Vinga, at the entrance to Gottenburg, received
through the Acting-Consul for Sweden and Norway
at Christchurch, is published for general information.

TELEGRAPH AND SIGNAL STATION OF VINGA.
ON the 15th September an electric telegraph office,
combined with a special establishment for exchanging
signals with vessels passing at sea, will be opened at
Vinga, at the entrance to Gottenburg.
This office is situated 140 metres westward from
the Vinga beacon.
Telegrams will there be received and despatched
daily from sunrise to sunset.
The signalling to ships at sea will be carried on
exclusively by means of flags and distance-signals,
according to the rules laid down in the International
Commercial Code of Signals.
With regard to telegrams sent to vessels, the fol-
lowing rules are to be observed :—
- The address must give, not only the ordinary
indications, but also the name of the vessel, its official
