Te Makarini Scholarships.

THREE scholarships, to be held at the Native
College, Te Aute, Hawke's Bay, are offered by
the Trustees of the fund instituted in memory of the
late Sir Donald McLean for promoting the higher
education of Maori youths.

Two of these scholarships are open to any Maori
or half-caste whose age on the 31st March, 1882,
shall not exceed fifteen years, and who shall have
attended a Native college or school for the preceding
twelve months. The remaining scholarship is open
to any Maori or half-caste whose age on the 31st
March, 1882, shall not exceed thirteen years, and
who shall have attended a Native village school for
the preceding twelve months.

The scholarships are of the annual value of ยฃ35,
and are tenable for a year and a half from the 1st
July, 1882.

The examination will be held at convenient centres
on the 27th and 28th April, 1882. Candidates
must, either directly or through their teachers, send
notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to pre-
sent themselves for examination. Such notice must
be posted not later than the 20th March.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice will
shortly be distributed among the teachers of Native
schools and boarding institutions. Copies may also
be obtained from the Secretaries to Education Boards
or from the Secretary to the Education Department.

South-West Mining District.
Applicant: James Stevenson. Style under which
it is intended to conduct the business: "The Lone
Hand Gold-Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods,
north of the Soldier's Creek Company's lease, Devil's
Creek, Inangahua, in the Nelson South-West Mining
District.
Applicants: John Auvent Chapman and Don Pedro
Anderson. Style under which it is intended to
conduct the business: "The Reefton Gold-Mining
Company." 16 acres 2 roods, adjoining the George
Gold-Mining Company's lease, Boatman's Creek,
Inangahua, in the Nelson South-West Mining Dis-
trict.
Given under my hand, at Nelson, this sixth
day of March, one thousand eight hundred
and eighty-two.

Gold Fields Notices.

Gold-Mining Leases to be granted.

IN conformity with the thirty-seventh section of
"The Mines Act, 1877," and with the regu-
lations made under that Act for the granting of leases for
gold-mining purposes, it is hereby notified that it is
intended to grant leases of Crown lands for gold-
mining purposes to the applicants specified in the
annexed Schedule, unless there shall be valid objec-
tions against such leases.

Objections to the granting of such leases, stating
the grounds of objection, must be made in writing,
and lodged with the Warden at Reefton on or before
the 6th day of April, 1882.

Copy of the applications made and plans annexed
may be seen at the Warden's Office at Reefton.

SCHEDULE.

APPLICANT: William Hindmarsh. Style under which
it is intended to conduct the business: "The Thames
Gold-Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods, east of
the Gorge Company, Boatman's, Inangahua, in the
Nelson South-West Mining District.

Applicant: Robert A. Roulston. Style under
which it is intended to conduct the business: "The
Langtry Gold-Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods,
east of the Happy Valley Company, Merrigigs, Ina-
ngahua, in the Nelson South-West Mining District.

Applicant: Samuel Barr. Style under which it
is intended to conduct the business: "The Planet."

Gold-Mining Leases to be granted.

Applicant: R. C. Savage. Style under which it
is intended to conduct the business: "Golden Crown
Gold-Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods, Reservoir
Hill, adjoining Lyell Township, Lyell, in the Nelson
South-West Mining District.

Applicant: George Edge (on behalf of the Com-
pany). Style under which it is intended to conduct
the business: "South Victor Emmanuel Quartz-
Mining Company." 16 acres 2 roods, south side of
Buller River, three miles from Lyell Township, Lyell,
in the Nelson South-West Mining District.

Given under my hand, at Nelson, this third
day of March, one thousand eight hun-
dred and eighty-two.
