Decision of Court of Inquiry into Stranding of
"Wakatu" confirmed.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 1st February, 1882.

HIS Excellency the Governor has, in pursuance of
the provisions of section 244 of "The Shipping
and Seamen's Act, 1877," been pleased to confirm the

following report of the Court of Inquiry into the
cause of the stranding of the steamer "Wakatu,"
official number 64818, 75 tons register, Christian
Erickson Greager, master, holding a New Zealand
certificate of competency, No. 5031.

The vessel was stranded on Tom's Rock, Cook
Strait, on the 6th January, 1882, at 7.45 a.m.

The certificate of George Saunders, the second
officer of the said vessel, is a New Zealand certificate
of competency as master, home trade, No. 5194.

H. A. ATKINSON.

THAT the damage appears by the evidence to have
been caused by George Saunders, second mate of
the ship, by his wrongful default, he being at the
time in charge of the ship, permitting the ship, after
she had passed Karori Rock at a distance of one
mile, to go at least four points off her course, and
thereby to strike on Tom's Rock; that, for his
wrongful default as aforesaid, the certificate of com-
petency of the said George Saunders, granted under
"The Shipping and Seamen's Act, 1877," of New
Zealand, No. 5194, be suspended for six calendar
months; and that the said George Saunders be
ordered to pay the costs of this inquiry, viz., four
guineas.

Given under my hand this 11th day of January,
1882, at Wellington.

EDWARD HARDCASTLE,
Resident Magistrate.

We concur in the above report.

WM. D. DAWSON,
