NOTES. The observations taken at Lincoln are furnished by the Director of the School of Agriculture. Lincoln having been substituted
for the former Meteorological Station in the Domain at Christchurch, the means for previous years for that station are inserted for comparison.
Lincoln is ten miles S.W. from Christchurch, and 65 feet above sea-level.
This return has been delayed in the hope of receiving the observations from Chatham Islands for June. They will be published
separately.

NOTES FOR APRIL, 1881.

Auckland. Generally fine and very dry; winds variable and moderate, light towards end; maximum rain on 18th, 83 in.; strong
wind on 3rd from N.E.; distant thunder on 4th; mist on 23rd.

Wellington. Stormy from N.W. on 1st; fine on 2nd; on night of 3rd rain, thunder, and lightning; strong N.W. wind on 4th, also
stormy from same quarter on 10th, 26th, and 27th; otherwise weather exceedingly fine, bright, and warm, generally from N.W., but also some
pleasant S.E. weather. A few light showers during month, but very small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 4th, 70 in.

Lincoln. Fine, with prevailing N. and N.E. winds, and generally moderate, except on 6th and 7th, when it blew strong; on 17th and
18th strong from N.W. and S.W. Small rainfall; the maximum recorded on 11th, 26 in.

Dunedin. Very wet during early part of month, the maximum 1.70 in. on 4th; latter part pleasant though showery. Prevailing S.W.
and W. winds, and light; fog on 3rd and 4th.

Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Generally fine, with about the average rainfall, maximum recorded on 5th, 35 in.; thunder on 18th;
prevailing S. and S.W. winds, and moderate.

GENERAL REMARKS. Fine weather, with little rain, except in the South, where it was rather in excess. Temperature above the
average, and high barometer. Winds moderate and variable. On the 8th, at Castle Hill, Canterbury, smart shock of earthquake reported
at 6.45 p.m.

NOTES FOR MAY, 1881.

Auckland. Light showers early part, but small total rainfall, the maximum on 13th, 265 in.; pleasant weather. Wind prevailed from
S. to W. and N.W., but no storms, though fresh at times. Thunder squall, with hail, on 14th.

Wellington. Heavy rain on 1st, wind from S.E. and S.W., 95 in. on 2nd, the maximum fall; showery to 4th, and strong S.W. wind;
fine then up to 9th, wind N.E.; on night of 9th stormy from N.W.; from 10th to 14th showery and dull, N.W.; pleasant remainder of
month, a few light showers on nights of 25th and 27th, strong N.W. wind, from which quarter it prevailed for month; heavy dews at nights.

Lincoln. Showery beginning of month, but otherwise very fine, with prevailing N. wind, but moderate; a gale on evening of 18th,
S.W., with slight rain; fog on 5th and 8th; maximum rain on 2nd, 795 in.

Dunedin. Generally light showers throughout month, maximum rain on 18th, 46 in.; end of month very fine; severe thunderstorm
on 10th, wind W.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and moderate; fog on 31st.
