gale from N.E. and N.; maximum rain recorded on 18th, 83 in.; prevailing E. wind; distant thunder on 4th.
Wellington.—Stormy from N.W. on 1st; fine on 2nd; on night of 3rd rain, thunder, and lightning; strong N.W. wind on 4th, also
on 10th, 26th, and 27th; otherwise weather exceedingly fine, bright, and warm, generally from N.W., but some pleasant S.E. weather also. A
few light showers during month, but small total fall, the maximum recorded on 4th, 70 in.
Lincoln.—Showery early part, and slight rain about middle of month, otherwise fine, bright, warm weather experienced, with prevailing
N. and N.E. winds and moderate; maximum rain recorded on 11th, 26 in.
Dunedin.—Wet early part of month, but pleasant remainder, with light occasional showers, the maximum rainfall recorded on 4th,
1.70 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, but moderate, often calm; foggy on 3rd and 4th.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands.—Very dry weather, only a few light showers, the maximum registered on 5th, 135 in.; prevailing N.W.
and S.W. winds and moderate; thunder on 18th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—The weather during this period has been fair, bright, and pleasant, and unusually dry, except at Dunedin, at
which station the rain was nearly double the average quantity, occurring chiefly in early part of month. Light variable winds experienced
at all places, and temperature in excess. The atmospheric pressure has been sustained above the average, with one exception, when a shallow
depression, with heavy grades for N.W. winds, passed over the colony between the 3rd and 6th.

J. HECTOR.

  • NOTE.—The observations taken at Lincoln are furnished by the Director of the School of Agriculture. Lincoln having been substituted
for the former Meteorological Station in the Domain at Christchurch, the means for previous years for that station are inserted for comparison.
Lincoln is ten miles S.W. from Christchurch, and 65 feet above sea-level.—J. H.
