Notice directing Attention to Section 4, "Stamp
Act Amendment Act, 1880."

Wellington, 14th September, 1880.

THE attention of all public officers and others
concerned in the payment of "public moneys"
within the meaning of "The Public Revenues Act,
1878," is specially directed to section 4 of "The
Stamp Act Amendment Act, 1880," which will come
into operation on the 1st October, 1880; and all
such persons are hereby enjoined and required to see

that in obtaining acquittances for the disbursement
of public moneys due effect is given to the provision
referred to.

Attention is also directed to sections 94 and 95 of
"The Stamp Act, 1875."

SECTION 4 OF "THE STAMP ACT AMENDMENT ACT, 1880."
THE law as to the duties payable upon receipts is hereby
amended as follows:-

(1.) All receipts given by or on behalf of the Corpora-
tion of any county, borough, Road Board, Education
Board, or Harbour Board shall be and the same are
hereby declared exempt from duty;

(2.) All receipts given to Her Majesty, or to any person
on her behalf, shall be chargeable with stamp duty
under the provisions of the said Act, and any
exemption of such receipts from stamp duty is
hereby repealed.

SECTIONS 94 AND 95 OF "THE STAMP ACT, 1875."

  1. The term "receipt" means and includes any note
    memorandum, or writing whatsoever, whereby any money
    amounting to two pounds or upwards, or any bill of exchange
    or promissory note for money amounting to two pounds or
    upwards, is acknowledged or expressed to have been received or
    deposited or paid, or whereby any debt, or demand, or any part
    of any debt or demand, of the amount of two pounds or upwards,
    is acknowledged to have been settled, satisfied, or discharged,
    or which signifies or imports any such acknowledgment, and
    whether the same is or is not signed with the name of any
    person.

  2. (1.) The duty upon a receipt may be denoted by an
    adhesive stamp, which is to be affixed and cancelled by the per-
    son by whom the receipt is given before he delivers it out of his
    hands.

(2.) Every person who writes or signs, or causes to be
written or signed, any receipt liable to duty without the same
being duly stamped, shall forfeit a sum not exceeding ten
pounds.

Tenders for Inland Mail Services for 1881 and 1882.

General Post Office,
Wellington, 17th August, 1880.

SEALED tenders will be received at the several
Chief Post Offices in the colony until Thursday,
the 30th September proximo, for the conveyance of
mails between the under-mentioned places, for a
period of two years, from the 1st January, 1881, to
the 31st December, 1882.
