NOTE.-Altitude of Bealey, 2,104 feet; Queenstown, 1,070 feet. The stations marked thus * are furnished with aneroid barometers only.

NOTES FOR JUNE, 1880.

Mongonui. Rather pleasant, but showery; the maximum rainfall recorded on 10th, 1.30 in.; winds moderate and variable, often calm;
thunder on 30th; hail on four days.

Auckland. Showery, with occasional fine bright days; winds moderate, mostly from S. to W.; gale from S.W. on 12th and 13th; heavy
rain on 23rd, 1.46 in. recorded, the maximum for month; heavy rain on 19th, about 35 in. falling in less than twenty minutes;
slight thunder on 2nd, 13th, and 21st; hail on 13th, and fog on 1st.

Taranaki. Wet but seasonable weather; maximum rain recorded on 29th, 2.30 in.; prevailing S.E. winds, and strong on 23rd and 24th;
otherwise moderate.

Napier. Showery, particularly during latter part; heavy rain on night of 18th, the maximum recorded on 19th, 1.9 in.; winds
moderate, prevailing from S. and S.W.; thick fog on morning of 29th.

Wanganui. Dull weather, with heavy showers of short duration; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th, 44 in.; an occasional fine day;
prevailing N.E. winds, at times strong; thunder and hail on 12th; fog on 25th and 26th.

Wellington. Fine weather for time of year with small rainfall, but often showery, the maximum occurring on 30th, 50 in.; at times
raw and cold; winds prevailed from S.E. and N.W., and moderate; a strong squall of wind and rain on night of 19th, with thunder
from N.W.; hail on 12th; fog on 27th.

Nelson. Light showers during middle and end, but otherwise fine pleasant weather, with prevailing S.E. wind, and generally moderate;
on 12th strong from S.W. and on 23rd strong E. wind; maximum rain recorded on 29th, 46 in.

Cape Campbell.

Christchurch. Cold but generally fine, with very small rainfall; towards end of month showery; maximum rain recorded on 30th, 80 in.;
fog on 9th; prevailing S.W. winds and light.

Bealey. Extremely fine for time of year, but cold; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 20th, 1.1 in.; N.W. gales on 9th and
11th; prevailing winds N.W., and usually light; snow on four days; fog on nine days.

Hokitika. Showery, but very small total rainfall for this period; maximum rain recorded on 21st, 98 in.; oecasionally fine days;
winds prevailed from E. and S.W., and at times strong; thunder on 19th; hail on 11th, 17th, and 19th.

Dunedin. Very showery unpleasant weather, with prevailing S.W. winds, and usually strong; maximum rain recorded on 30th, 2.12 in.

Queenstown. Mild weather for time of year with little rain, the maximum fall recorded on 21st, 30 in.; snow on hills on 3rd and 12th;
six days of fog; prevailing N.W. winds and moderate; gale on 4th from W.

Southland. First part wet, latter part frosty and fine; thunder on 3rd and 13th; maximum rain recorded on 13th, 1.02 in.; hail on
5th, 6th, and 13th; fog on 23rd; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and stormy on four days from that quarter.

Chatham Islands.-

GENERAL REMARKS. For the time of year the weather throughout has been mild, with generally small rainfall and moderate winds;
at some of the southern stations unusually fine. Earthquake at Queenstown on 8th, at 6.30 p.m., slight.
