NOTES FOR APRIL, 1880.

Mongonui.—Showery in early part, but otherwise fine; prevailing N.E. and S.E. winds and moderate; rather stormy on 1st and 2nd from N.E.; maximum rain recorded on 11th, 380 in.

Auckland.—Generally fine, clear, and dry weather; light winds E. to S.; maximum rain registered on 11th, 300 in.; thick fog on 9th.

Taranaki.—Generally fine, clear, and dry weather, light winds E. to S.; maximum rain registered on 11th, 79 in. recorded from S.E. and N.E.; strong N.W. breeze on 10th, and from S.E. on 21st.

Napier.—Weather generally fine and pleasant; on 11th, 12th, and 13th showery, the maximum fall recorded on 13th, 71 in.; thick fog on 9th.

Wanganui.—Weather throughout very fine, with exception of a few hours on 11th and 26th, when it blew from S.W. and S.E. with rain; on morning of 19th; winds prevailed from S. and moderate; on the 14th rather strong S. breeze; hail on 19th.

Wellington.—Very fine up to 5th; from 6th to 10th stormy from N.W. and unpleasant; on night of 10th changed to S.E., and showery and squally to 14th. Remainder of month generally fine bright weather, principally from S.E., occasionally showery towards end; prevailing S.E. and N.W. winds.

Nelson.—Fine weather; slight rain about middle of month, 38 in. in the maximum recorded on 10th; prevailing N.E. and S.E. winds and moderate.

Cape Campbell.—

Christchurch.—Fine seasonable weather, heavy dews and occasional frosts occurring on several nights; from 8th to 13th light showers, on 10th vivid lightning with hailstorm in neighbourhood doing damage; prevailing N.E., E., and S.W. winds, and moderate.

Bealey.—Up to 6th very fine and bright; from 7th to 12th wet, remainder fine and pleasant; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 1.91 in.; from which quarter it prevailed; thunder on 9th; fog on nine days.

Hokitika.—Fine to 5th; heavy rain from 6th to 11th; 2.70 in. recorded on 8th, the maximum for month; fine pleasant weather from 12th to 24th; remainder of month showery; prevailing S.W. winds and frequently stormy; fog on 8th.

Dunedin.—Pleasant though showery weather; maximum rain recorded on 8th, 1.42 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and thunder on 11th; hail on 26th.

Queenstown.—Fine to 5th, then showery to 13th, followed by fine weather until 25th, when it rained hard and continued showery to end; prevailing W. wind and stormy on 24th; snow on 11th; nine days of fog.

Southland.—Fine early part, wet towards middle, then fine until end, when light showers were experienced; light winds, chiefly from W.; thunder on 11th; hail on 11th and 26th.

Chatham Islands.—Very fine up to 9th, then showery until 28th; last few days fine; greatest rainfall on 11th, 26 in.; prevailing S.W. winds and moderate, except on 27th, when it blew hard; hail on 26th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Fine, bright, dry weather almost throughout; remarkably high atmospheric pressure and high temperature; very small rainfall; moderate winds. Earthquakes reported at Wanganui on 17th, slight shock; at Wellington on 20th, at 12.39 p.m., a noise followed by a smart shake N. to S.; at Queenstown on 29th, at 2.30 a.m., sharp. Meteors observed on 10th, 18th, and 23rd.
