Commissioner of Customs by His Excellency the
Governor, the following promotions and appoint-
ments have been made in the Customs Department:-
EDWARD PATTEN, Collector, Hokitika, to be Col-
lector at the Port of Napier.
EDWIN FRANCIS RICH, First Landing Waiter,
Napier, to be Collector at the Port of Hokitika,
HENRY WILLIAM BREWER, Landing Surveyor,
Auckland, to be Acting Collector at the Port
of Nelson. Appointment to date from the 8th
June, 1880.
WILLIAM THOMPSON GLASGOW, Landing Waiter
and Examining Officer at Invercargill, to be
Acting Landing Surveyor at the Port of
Auckland.
WILLIAM LAING, Landing Waiter at Dunedin,
to be Landing Waiter and Examining Officer
at the Port of Lyttelton.
RICHARD CARTER, Clerk and Warehousekeeper
at the Port of Napier, to be Landing Waiter
and Examining Officer at that port.
GEORGE PRAIN, Clerk at Poverty Bay, to be
Clerk at the Port of Napier.
ROBERT JONES, Clerk at Dunedin, to be Clerk
at the Port of Wellington.
WILLIAM FREDERICK MITFORD, Clerk at Lyttel-
ton, to be Clerk at the Port of Auckland.
HEYWOOD GEORGE VICKERS, Clerk at Welling-
ton, to be Clerk at the Port of Poverty Bay.
JOHN GILMOUR, Cadet at Auckland, to be Cadet
at the Port of Lyttelton.

JAMES INGLIS, Esq.,
to be a Receiver of Gold Revenue and Mining
Registrar, under "The Mines Act, 1877," for Lyell,
in the Nelson South-West Gold Fields, as from the
2nd June instant.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from
the Marine Authorities at Port Adelaide and
Brisbane, are published for general information.

ROCK IN FAIRWAY OFF HEATH POINT, NORMANBY
SOUND.
THE Harbourmaster at Thursday Island reports the
existence of a rocky patch, 150 feet long and 50 feet
broad, with not more than 13 feet at low water on
the shallowest part-which appears to be a pinnacle
rock-with foul bottom all round it and a strong
tide-rip. Compass bearings from shallowest part are
as follow: Heath Point Rock, S.S.E. E.; Webb
Point, W. N.; centre of Police Magistrate's
house, E. by N. N.
A red buoy will be placed as soon as practicable
to mark the spot.

TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION WITH CAPES BORDA
AND WILLOUGHBY.-KANGAROO ISLAND.
MASTERS of inward-bound steam and sailing ships
carrying passengers are requested to signal, when
practicable, on passing the Telegraphic Stations at
Cape Borda and Cape Willoughby, Kangaroo Island,
as to any and what description of sickness has
occurred during the passage.
By so doing possible delay and inconvenience
may be avoided.
No charge will be made for sending such informa-
tion to Port Adelaide.

SEMAPHORE ANCHORAGE, PORT ADELAIDE, GULF OF
ST. VINCENT.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the night
of the 1st August, 1880, a fixed red light will be ex-
hibited from the tower of the hulk "Fitzjames," in-
stead of the present fixed white light.
