The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 273 in April, against 293 in March, an increase of 20.
The deaths in April were 102, against 125 in March, a decrease of 23.
There were 6 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards, viz., 1 male of 70 at Auckland ; 2 males of 69 and 76, and 2
females of 68 and 72, at Wellington ; and 1 male of 78 at Dunedin.

Zymotic Diseases.—The mortality from these diseases decreased from 62 in March to 40 in April. The deaths from
dysentery and diarrhœa having been 21 in April, against 49 in March, but the deaths from typhoid fever increased from 7 in
March to 12 in April. In April there were 12 deaths from rheumatic fever; no deaths from that cause having occurred in
March.

Constitutional Diseases caused 18 deaths in April, against 17 in March.

Local Diseases caused 26 deaths in April; the deaths from diseases of this class having been 32 in March, and 43 in
February.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal Zymotic
diseases of the Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
