The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.

POPULATION.—In the case of Nelson the population is given according to the estimate for January, 1879, as the local
authorities have not yet supplied the information necessary to enable the estimate to be corrected. In the other cases the
estimates are for the 1st January, 1880.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 489, against 437 in February, being an increase of 52. The deaths
amounted to 215 in March, being two less than the number in February.

Of the above deaths, males contributed 109; females, 106. 121 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
56.28 per cent. of the whole number; 86 of these were of children under one year of age.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ-
church, and Dunedin that were registered during the month of March, 1880.
