Notice to Mariners.—No. 13 of 1880.
APPROACHES TO PORT NICHOLSON, NORTH
ISLAND, N.Z.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 16th March, 1880.
A SUNKEN rock (on which the "Sophia R.
Luhrs" struck) has been found about $1\frac{1}{2}$ cables
length E. by S. from the end of the reef running
out on the west side of Lyell Bay. This rock has
only about 17 feet on it at low-water spring tides.
Particular attention is directed to the directions
given in "The New Zealand Pilot" (p. 127, edition of
1875): "Running for Port Nicholson from the north-
ward or westward, with a fair wind, Cape Terawite
should be passed at a distance of from two or three
miles, and the continuous coast not approached
nearer until arrived between Karori Rock and Sinclair
Head, when a vessel may haul gradually up towards
the latter, taking care to keep Pencarrow Lighthouse
well open, and passing about one mile from the
points of land to the eastward of Sinclair Head, until
Barrett Reef opens out, when she may steer boldly
for the southern end of the latter, passing it, if
necessary, within $\frac{1}{2}$ cable, as before described.
