NOTES FOR OCTOBER, 1880.

Mongonui.-Wet unpleasant weather, with prevailing W. and S. winds, and strong on 1st, 18th, 19th, 20th, and 27th; maximum rain
recorded on 17th, 1.51 in.; thunder on 7th; a few fine days.

Auckland.-Wet and unpleasant, especially beginning and latter part; maximum rainfall on 1st, 1.45 in., and on 18th, 1.03 in..
prevailing W. wind; very stormy on 18th from N.E., and on 27th and 28th from S. to S.W.; loud thunder on 1st; hail on 1st, with
short W. gale.

Taranaki.-Unsettled showery weather, with prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds, and often stormy; maximum rain on 19th, 93 in.

Napier. Early part fine, after 17th showery; maximum rain recorded on 26th, 1.08 in., also heavy on 27th, 1.04 in.; prevailing N.E.
wind; stormy on 7th, 9th, and 28th from S.W.

Wanganui. Generally fine, though rain fell on eighteen days chiefly at night, the maximum fall recorded on 26th, 705 in.; warm bright
days prevailed, with S.E. and N.W. winds; stormy on five days.

Wellington.-Dull, showery on 1st from N.W., in evening changed to S.E. and heavy rain, barometer rising; fine on 2nd from S.E., wind
changed to N.W. in night, and continued in that quarter with fine weather until night of 7th, when it changed to S.E. and rain;
hail on morning of 8th, with rain, fine during day, but cold; fine also on 9th from same quarter; changed on night of 9th to N.W.;
12th, 13th, and 14th, stormy from N.W.; rain on night of 14th, also stormy on 15th from N.W.; remainder of month very
changeable, at times bright and pleasant, with showers at intervals, frequent changes of wind; stormy on 20th from N.W.; on 23rd
and 24th, strong N.W. gales; on 25th, fine morning, light N.W. wind, at 3.30 p.m. changed to S.E. through S.W. and rain
came on, severe S.E. gale with rain in night; on 26th, strong S.E. wind with hail, very cold; tolerably fine from 27th to end,
chiefly from S.E.; maximum rain recorded on 1st, 53 in., and on 21st, 37 in.

Nelson. Showery generally, with intervals of fine, at times stormy, chiefly from N. and N.W.; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 1.88 in.

Cape Campbell.-Fine early part, but showery latter half of month, prevailing S.E. and N.W. winds; stormy on 4th from N., and on 8th,
26th, and 27th from S.E.; snow on 26th; fog on 18th, 19th, and 20th; maximum rain on 26th, 55 in.

Christchurch.--Fine seasonable weather; stormy on 2nd, 7th, and 8th from S.W., and on 24th from N.W; generally winds prevailed
from N.E. and S.W., and moderate; maximum rain recorded on 2nd, 45 in.; hail on 7th, 8th, and 26th.

Bealey.--

Hokitika.-

Dunedin. Agreeable weather, with light showers; maximum rain recorded on 16th, 320 in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 23rd
Queenstown. First part squally, with rain chiefly from N.W., but on the whole weather fine; snow fell on the hills on six days, and fog
on seven days; maximum rain recorded on 1st, 1.01 in.; prevailing N.W. wind.

Southland. A cold but on the whole a dry month; heavy rain recorded on 1st, 1.08 in.; thunder on 7th; hail on 8th and 26th;
prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and generally moderate.

Chatham Islands.-

GENERAL REMARKS.--Rainfall in the North generally in excess of average, while in the South it was less than usual; but for the time
of year the weather has been fine throughout.
