The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
POPULATION. In the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then
taken; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the 1st January, 1879.
† One of these deaths took place at the Christchurch Hospital.
The total births in the above boroughs, excluding Sydenham (now entered for the first time), amounted to 489, against 395
in June, an increase of 94. The deaths amounted to 165 in July, an increase of 21 on the number in June.
Of the above deaths, males contributed 114; females, 67. 88 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
48.62 per cent. of the whole number; 66 of these were of children under one year of age.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ-
church, and Dunedin that were registered, during the Month of July, 1879.
