There was last month a decrease of 6 in the number of deaths, but this decrease is small compared with the increase (46)
in the number of deaths in January upon the number in December. Excluding the deaths in Invercargill, as the deaths for
that borough were not published in the early part of last year, the number of deaths is greater than the number in February,
1878, by 77.

Zymotic diseases caused 83 deaths in February, against 78 in January. Dysentery and diarrhea caused 51 deaths in
January and 57 in February: 26, or nearly one-half, of these deaths occurred in Wellington. 17 deaths from these causes
occurred in Christchurch; but only 1 in the most populous borough, Dunedin. The mortality from these causes was only 4 in
Auckland. Of these 57, only 3 were of persons exceeding 3 years of age, 39 having been of infants under 1 year. There were,
in addition, 2 deaths from cholera of children not exceeding 2 years of age.

Constitutional diseases.—There was a slight increase in the number of deaths in this class as compared with January.
Phthisis caused 12 deaths in February, against 9 in January.

Local diseases caused 43 deaths in February, against 48 in January. Of this class, diseases of the respiratory organs caused
15 deaths in February, against 14 in January.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the two months at each town from six principal Zymotic diseases of the
Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been
distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise
to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and
climatic influence of the season on health.
