THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Harbourmaster, Hokitika, is published for
general information.

J. BALLANCE.

Harbour Office,
Hokitika, 20th February, 1879.

OWING to the difficulty of distinguishing the colour
of the leading beacons at Hokitika the colour has
been changed from white to red, and the front beacon
has every alternate square foot down the centre
painted black, to distinguish it from the back beacon,
which has a black band painted horizontally across
the middle, two feet wide, and each beacon is sur-
mounted with a red flag.

This colour distinguishes the beacons from the
colour of all surrounding objects.

THOMAS TURNBULL,
Harbourmaster.
