The number of births registered in these boroughs in 1878 amounted to 3,622, equal to 43.13 per 1,000
of the aggregate mean population of the boroughs, against 3,618, or 45.0 per 1,000 of the population in 1877.
The births in 1876 amounted to 3,622. There has thus been a gradual decrease in the birth-rate per 1,000
of the population. It may be of interest to compare this birth-rate with the birth-rate in England. In
1875 the birth-rate in England and Wales was 35.5 per 1,000 persons living; but in the County of Durham
(this county having the highest birth-rate in the kingdom) the birth-rate was 45.5 per 1,000. In Durham
the married women comprised 60 per cent. of all the women at the ages 15-45. In the New Zealand
boroughs stated the married women amounted to 55.8 per cent. of all the women at the ages 15-45, the
total number of females in the boroughs being in the proportion of 95.63 to every 100 males. The propor-
tions may be stated as follows:—
| | Proportion of
Females to every
100 Males. | Proportion of
Married Females
to every 100 Females
at Ages 15-45. | Birth-rate per 1,000
of Population. |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Zealand boroughs | 95.63 | 55.8 | 43.13 |
| England and Wales | 105.37 | 50.0 | 35.5 |
| County Durham (England) | 94.0 | 60.0 | 45.5 |
