The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
POPULATION. In the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then
taken; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the 1st January, 1879.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 566, against 513 in September, being an increase of 53. The deaths
amounted to 150 in October, being an increase of 12 on the number in September.
Of the above deaths, males contributed 75; females, 75. 58 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
38.67 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were of children under one year of age.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ-
church, and Dunedin that were registered during the month of October, 1879.
