NOTES FOR JUNE, 1878.

Mongonui. Very wet boisterous weather, with prevailing S.W. winds and frequently strong; on the 25th strong gale from N.W., velocity
of wind, 70 miles per hour for a short time; barometer, 29.152; strong gale on night of 28th, S.W.; thunder on 21st, 27th, and 30th;
hail on 27th; maximum rain recorded on 25th, 2.5 in.

Auckland. Unusually wet throughout, with very low barometer; maximum rain recorded on 26th, 920 in.; prevailing wind from S.W.
and W. to N.W., and strong towards end of month, especially on 23rd and 24th; dense fogs on 1st, 3rd, and 4th; thunder on 16th,
17th, 22nd, 23rd, and 30th, but slight, on 23rd and 30th accompanied by heavy hail showers.

Taranaki. Very wet stormy month, prevailing S.W. winds and very strong; maximum rain recorded on 20th, 2.10 in.; thunder on 15th
and 20th.

Napier. Unsettled weather; rain about the average; the maximum recorded on 6th, 1'54 in.; wind generally moderate and westerly;
strong on 28th and 29th.

Wellington. On the whole a showery, unpleasant month, although at times bright clear weather; maximum rain recorded on the 5th,
1.950 in.; also on 15th heavy fall registered, 1.150 in.; prevailing N.W. and S.E. wind, at times fresh, but no storms of any conse-
quence experienced; very cold and severe on 22nd and few following days from S.W., with snow on hills, rain, and sleet; fog on 14th.

Wanganui.-

Nelson. Rather wet, unpleasant weather; maximum rain registered on 15th, 85 in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and moderate, except on 3rd and
15th, when it blew strong; snow on hills greater part of month; fog on 15th.

Cape Campbell.--Strong S. and S.E. winds, and cloudy showery weather up to 10th; thick fog on nights of 2nd, 8th, and 9th; light
variable winds and fine to 20th; remainder very cold and stormy from W. and N.W., but no rain; maximum rain recorded on 15th,
74 in.

Christchurch.-Opened fine; on 3rd rain from S.W., and continued showery till 7th, when days became fine with rain at nights until
14th; dense fog morning of 15th; continued fine during days with showers at nights up to 22nd, when a heavy fall of snow occurred,
remaining for three days, and in some places for five days; fine until 27th, when hail and sleet fell; last three days warm and fine
from N.W.; prevailing S.W. winds and moderate, except 5th and 6th.

Bealey. Exceedingly wet, gloomy, cold weather throughout, twenty-five days of rain, the maximum fall recorded on 29th, 1.83 in.; snow
on seven days; fog on ten days; thunder on 24th and 29th; gales on 24th and 28th from westward, otherwise wind moderate and
variable.

Hokitika. Very wet unpleasant month, twenty-seven days of rain, the maximum on 8th, 2.84 inches; prevailing E. and S.W. winds;
strong on 14th from N.E., gale on 24th from S.W., and strong on 28th from same quarter, otherwise moderate; six days of thunder;
snow on four days, and hail on four days.

Dunedin. Extremely wet weather, especially from 4th to 15th, maximum rainfall on 7th, 3.10 inches; latter part of month cold and frosty,
with snow storms on four days; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 22nd and 23rd; fog on three days.

Queenstown. Showery generally, although no heavy falls, the maximum recorded on 15th, 39 in.; weather rather mild up to 21st, when
snowstorm occurred and covered the ground; snow also on 24th and 29th; thunder on 28th; fog on seven days; prevailing N.W.
wind.

Southland. A cold wet month, especially last ten days, most severe month for many years; maximum rain on 27th, 1.10 inch; thunder
on 28th and 30th; snow on seven days; hail on eight days; fog on one day; prevailing westerly winds and often strong, especially
from 22nd to 25th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

A very cold, wet, and severe month throughout. The rainfall at nearly all places in excess, and frequent thunder storms, with hail and
snow, and prevailing S.W. winds. Very low atmospheric pressure throughout. Earthquakes at Napier on 5th at 11.15 p.m., sharp, and
on 23rd at 3.15 p.m., not so marked; at Wellington on 23rd at 7.38 a.m., slight, direction S.E.; at Nelson on 24th at 8.30 a.m.; at Cape
Campbell on 3rd at 12.15 a.m., smart.
