NOTICE TO MARINERS.
No. 21 of 1878.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 20th August, 1878.
THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Portmaster, Brisbane, is published for
general information.
G. GREY.
SHOAL PATCH OFF TURTLE GROUP, INNER ROUTE.
CAPTAIN BROWN, of the s.s. "Gunga," reports the
existence of a shoal patch, over which the vessel
grazed, and on which there probably would not be
more than 12 feet at low water, lying 1 mile to
the northward of the North Island of the Turtle
Group, and with that Island on with Lookout Point.
Nothing less than 7 fathoms was obtained by the
lead.
G. P. HEATH, Commander R.N.,
Portmaster.
Department of Ports and Harbours,
Brisbane, 22nd July, 1878.
Decision of Court of Enquiry, Wreck of the
"Ellerton," confirmed.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 20th August, 1878.
IT is hereby notified that His Excellency the
Governor has been pleased to confirm the fol-
lowing decision of the Court of Enquiry into the
wreck of the schooner "Ellerton."
G. GREY.
"THAT the cause of the vessel getting into the
position, in attempting to escape from which she was
stranded, was that she was dragged from her anchor-
age in the Wanganui roadstead, between the hours of
3 and 4 a.m. on the 15th instant, into shallow and
insufficient cable.
"That, failing to enter the river, the master ought
to have proceeded to sea. He might have done so,
and did not.
"That, having determined to remain at anchor, the
master used no precaution to meet the increasing
severity of the weather, by letting go the second
anchor in proper time, which he ought to have done.
"That, during the said master's watch, the vessel
dragged her anchor from her original position in
eight fathoms until she got close to the outer break
in three fathoms, without the knowledge of the
master, which knowledge might have been obtained
by bearings or soundings, and although he had
grounds to warn him of the necessity of ascertaining
whether his ship was safely moored and was holding
her own.
"That, for his defaults aforesaid, the New Zealand
Master's Certificate No. 100, of the said master,
Daniel Reavy, is suspended for six calendar months
from this date.
"Given under my hand this thirtieth day of
July, one thousand eight hundred and
seventy-eight, at Wanganui, in the Colony
of New Zealand.
"EDWARD HARDCASTLE,
"Justice of the Peace and Resident Magistrate."
"I, Henry Shuttleworth, Nautical Assessor on the
inquiry into the loss of the "Ellerton," do fully
concur in the above report concerning the loss of the
said vessel.
"H. SHUTTLEWORTH,
"Nautical Assessor."
"The Otago Dock Trust Ordinance, 1865."
