THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

The following table shows the deaths in the boroughs during 1877 and 1876 from certain diseases:---

Scarlet Fever. Dysentery and Diarrhea. Typhus and Typhoid Fever. Phthisis. Diseases of Respiratory Organs.
1876. 1877. 1876. 1877. 1876.
Auckland ... 1 31 18 14
Thames ... 6 48 41 12
Wellington ... 11 48 41 12
Nelson ... ... 1 9 3
Christchurch ... 10 48 27 8
Dunedin ... 51 55 42 13
Hokitika ... 40 8 4 1

There were not any deaths in the boroughs from measles in either 1877 or 1876, although in 1875
there were 126 deaths from that cause. In 1877 nearly all the deaths from scarlet fever were confined to
Dunedin and Hokitika, the mortality in those places from that cause having been heavy.
Typhus and typhoid fevers caused 32 deaths in the boroughs in 1877, against 44 in 1876. Of these
deaths the largest number in any locality occurred in Wellington, the number having been 11; but still
one less than in 1876.
