Hydrographic Memorandum No. 18.

THE following information, received from the Com-
manding Officers of Her Majesty's ships, is published
for general information :-

  1. From letter dated 30th October, 1877, from
    Lieut. C. Caffin of Her Majesty's schooner "Bea-
    gle:"-
    "I anchored at Sans Souci, Mallicolo Island, so
    called by an American named Proctor, who is copra-
    making there. Found an excellent anchorage from
    easterly and south-easterly winds, but open to N.E.
    and N. Very good water can be obtained from a
    stream close to Mr. Proctor's house on the main beach,
    not on the promontory."

  2. From Quarterly return dated 30th September,
    1877, from Lieut. Musters, of Her Majesty's schooner
    "Conflict:"
    Chart No. 1380, New Hebrides and Loyalty Islands.
    -"A reef extends about 600 yards to north from
    detached rock on south side of S.W. Bay, Mallicolo."

  3. From letter dated 18th November, 1877, from
    Lieut. J. G. Musters, of Her Majesty's schooner
    "Conflict:"
    "I passed on the passage close to the assigned
    position* of Princess Island and Brougham Shoal, but
    could see nothing of them from the masthead or
    obtain any soundings."

Hydrographic Notice No. 19.

The following information has been furnished me by
Mr. W. Levie, Master of the s.s. "Juan:"-
Australian Directory, Vol. II.-"I found on 5th
July, 1877, a rock a-wash, about a cable's length in
diameter, 3 miles distant S.E. true from K1 Isle,
Cumberland Islands."

Authority to Census Enumerators to Frank.

The CENSUS ENUMERATORS, and
The SUPERINTENDENT COLLECTORS,

under "The Census Act, 1877," a notification of
whose appointments appeared in the Gazette of the
20th ultimo, or whose appointments may be hereafter
notified in any subsequent Gazette, to frank and
receive, free from prepayment of postage, for a period
of four months from this date, letters and packets
addressed from or to them "On Census Business
only."

IT is hereby notified for general information that
the designation of the Post Office in the Postal
District of Canterbury, formerly known as White
Cliffs Junction (Railway Station), has been changed
to

HORNDON JUNCTION.

Inland Mail Service.

General Post Office,
Wellington, 2nd January, 1878.

SEALED tenders will be received at the General
Post Office, Wellington, until noon of Saturday,
the ninth day of February proximo, for the con-
veyance of mails once fortnightly between Foxhill
and Hampden, or between Foxhill and Lyell, vid
Hampden.

The service to be performed by a two-horse coach,
capable of carrying eight passengers.

The service to be for the period commencing
1st April, 1878, and ending 31st December, 1878.

Forms of tender, together with terms and con-
ditions of contract, may be procured from the Chief
Postmasters at Nelson and Westport, and at the
Post Offices at Foxhill, Hampden, and Lyell.

Tenders to be indorsed "Tenders for Foxhill and
Lyell Service," or "Foxhill and Hampden Service,"
as the case may be, and addressed to the Postmaster-
General, Wellington.

The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be
accepted.

Application for Registration of Trade Marks.

NOTICE is hereby given, that Messrs. RUSSELL
and DEVORE, Solicitors, of Auckland, New Zea-
land, have applied, on behalf of Messrs. P. H. DRAKE
and W. P. WARD, both of New York, United States
of America (trading under the style of the "Lyon
Manufacturing Company" New York), to register
under "The Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade
marks of which the following are descriptions:β€”

Description of Trade Mark on Mexican Mustang
Liniment.

Each packet contains a bottle on which are blown
the words "Mexican Mustang Liniment, Lyon
MFG. Co., New York." Around the bottle is
wrapped a label which has in the centre a vignette
with ring enclosing the words "Mexican Mustang
Liniment." The vignette represents in the fore-
ground a female figure pouring water out of an urn
into the sea. In the background the vignette repre-
sents a volcano in full action, and across its face is
the facsimile of the signature of G. W. Westbrook,
Chemist-"G. W. Westbrook, Chemist." Support-
ing the vignette on the right side is the obverse side
of a United States coin bearing date 1853, and on
the left is the reverse side of the same coin, the
latter bearing on its face the word "Trade," and the
former the word "mark." The bottom of the label
contains a Mexican scene, a prairie upon which two
hunters are engaged lassoeing mustangs, while on
the background there is a range of mountains, one a
volcanic peak, and a palm tree on the left side. The
