NOTES FOR JULY, 1877.
Mongonui.—First half of month fine, remainder unsettled, except last three days, which were fine; prevailing easterly winds, strong on
18th and 19th, and gale on 20th and 21st; rainfall small, the maximum recorded on 21st, 1.13 in.; thunder on 24th and 25th.
Auckland.—Unusually clear, fine, and cold, with high barometer; little rain, maximum recorded on 21st, '49 in.; wind mostly light, chiefly
from S.E. and to S.W.; strong winds on 8th from N.E., and 23rd from S.W.; thunder on 2nd; fog on 12th.
Taranaki.—A very fine month; prevailing S.E. winds, strong on 31st; slight rainfall, the maximum on 21st, '86 in.
Napier.—Early part remarkably fine, with frosty nights, latter part showery; maximum fall recorded on 21st, 1.03 in.; prevailing winds
dull and cold, from 12th to 20th; very wet from 21st to 23rd, from S.E.; 1.6 in. rain recorded on 22nd, the maximum for
the month; fine from 24th to 28th, S.W. wind and sharp frosts during nights; dull and damp during remainder of month; snow on
hills across harbour on 23rd and 24th; prevailing S.E. and N.W. winds; on the whole, a cold, damp, unpleasant month.
Wanganui.—On the whole a fine month, though showery at times; the maximum fall recorded on 12th, '530 in.; winds moderate, and
prevailing S.E. winds, strong on 5th and 6th, otherwise light.
Nelson.—Very fine up to 20th; prevailing S.E. winds; on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, heavy rain, the maximum recorded on 22nd, 1.36 in.;
during day and returning to E. and S.E. in morning.
Cape Campbell.—Fine weather, with moderate breezes, chiefly from South; on 23rd and 31st blew a gale from S.E.; rainfall small, the
Christchurch.—Commencement of month cold and wet; snow on 2nd; hail on 3rd; fine from 8th to 20th, then showery, except for
few days, to end; small total rainfall, maximum recorded on 29th, '40 in.; prevailing S.W. winds, but moderate; snow also on 23rd;
very cold at times.
Bealey.—Fine frosty weather generally; very small rainfall, the greatest recorded on 21st, '825 in.; light variable winds; frequent calms;
fog on 1st, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 30th.
Hokitika.—Fine weather generally; occasional showers; maximum rain recorded on 11th, '87 in.; prevailing E. winds, strong on 10th
and 20th, otherwise moderate; fog on 22nd.
Dunedin.—Very changeable during early part; the latter part fine, clear, and frosty; maximum rainfall recorded on 22nd, '960 in.; snow
on 22nd and 23rd; hail on 22nd; prevailing S.W. winds, strong on 5th and 6th, otherwise light.
Queenstown.—Weather very fine; some cold, frosty nights, succeeded by calm, bright days; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, '19 in.;
snow on 2nd and 22nd; fog on 8th; prevailing N.W. winds.
Southland.—Very stormy and showery up to 23rd; prevailing N.E. winds, also S.W.; fine during latter part of month; rainfall below the
average, maximum recorded on 1st, '50 in.; hail on six days; severe frost latter part of month.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Very fine weather generally throughout for time of year; small rainfall and moderate winds; exceeding high barometric pressure;
temperature below the average. Earthquakes felt at Wellington, 4th, at 4.27 p.m., N. to S., slight; and on 16th, slight double shock,
between 10 and 11 p.m.; at Nelson, on 4th, at 4.20 p.m., sharp, and at Westport, at 3.30 p.m., smart.
