The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The estimates of the population are calculated on the number of inhabited houses in each borough, as shown in returns
supplied by the municipal authorities.
The births were 62 more than in September.
The deaths were 11 more in number than the deaths in September.
Of the deaths, males contributed 52; females, 56: 46 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 42.59
per cent. of the whole number; 29 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
There were 9 deaths of persons of 65 years of age and over: 5 of these persons were males and 4 females; 1 female of
67 died at Auckland; 3 males of 72, 73, and 75, and 1 female of 74, died at Wellington; 1 female of 76 at Christchurch;
and 1 female of 70, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the Month of
October, 1877.
