NOTICE TO MARINERS.
No. 28, of 1877.
Customs Department (Marine Branch),
Wellington, 2nd August, 1877.
THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Colonial Secretary of Ceylon, is published
for general information.
GEO. MCLEAN.
CEYLON—SOUTH COAST.
BUOY MARKING GINDURAH ROCK.
NOTICE is hereby given, that an iron buoy, painted
red, is laid in 11 fathoms of water, about 2 cables
length south of the Gindurah Rock. It is laid at
this distance from the rock on account of the foul
ground in its more immediate vicinity.
As the Lighthouse at Point-de-Galle can be seen
before the buoy which marks this rock, and its
position can always be depended on, commanders of
vessels should take it as the best mark to determine
their position in making this port.
Vessels making the port from the westward or
northward will, by keeping the Lighthouse on the
bearing of E. by N. N., pass about two miles
south of the Gindurah Rock, and clear the Whales.
All is clear and open to the southward of this bear-
ing, which will also give vessels a good fairway to the
pilot grounds.
Vessels wanting a pilot should heave-to with the
Lighthouse about N.E. to N.N.E distant about one
mile, which will keep them well clear of the Cadda
Rocks, off the entrance to the port.
By direction of the Government of Ceylon.
