CLASS V. - VIOLENT DEATHS.
ORDER 1. - Accidental. - Killed on Railway, 1; Poisoned Wound from Dead Body, 1.
ORDER 4. - Suicide. -Gunshot Wound, 1.
Indefinite. -Found Dead, 1; Natural Causes, 1.

Zymotic Diseases. - There were 25 deaths from Zymotic disease in the boroughs during April. Of 9 fatal cases of
Scarlatina, 5 occurred at Hokitika, and 4 at Dunedin. In March there were 20 deaths from this cause, 10 at Hokitika, and 10 at
Dunedin. Deaths from Typhoid Fever were 5 in number, and occurred as follows:-Auckland, 1; Thames, 2; Wellington, 1;
and Christchurch, 1.

Diseases of the Respiratory System. - There were only 7 deaths from these complaints, against 13 in March.

Violent Deaths. - Two of these were accidental: a pointsman having been killed by a railway train, and a gardener having
had his flesh poisoned by contact with a dead body. There was one case of suicide by shooting.

Comparison with April, 1876. - The total of deaths for last month is 22 less than the total for April of 1876. Against 25
deaths from Zymotic disease in April, 1877, the same month of the previous year showed 36. The death rate for April, 1877,
compares favourably as a whole with the rate that obtained in April, 1876, during which month there were 105 deaths in the
boroughs.
