all Signals at Crossings, Intermediate Stations,
Tunnels, and of each Pointsman on the Line,
as well as to respect all Special Orders which
the Officers in charge of Stations may think
necessary.

  1. The Guard or Brakesman of a Train is
    responsible for attaching and lighting the Tail
    and Side Lamps on the last Carriage or
    Wagon, or attaching Tail Board, and Engine-
    driver and Fireman for placing the Lamps on
    the Engine and Tender. When a Carriage is
    detached, care must be taken to see that the
    Tail and Side Lamps are removed and re-fixed
    to the Train.

  2. Prisoners, Deserters, and Persons
    afflicted with insanity or contagious diseases,
    and their attendants, must never be placed
    with the other Passengers, but be put in a
    compartment, and, if practicable, in a carriage
    by themselves.

  3. Brakesmen must be in attendance one
    hour before the time fixed for the departure
    of the Train.

  4. Brakesmen are responsible that all
    the Wagons in the Train are properly coupled
    together. They are carefully to examine the
    Loading and Sheeting of the Wagons before
    starting from each Station, to insure the pro-
    tection of the Goods from rain and sparks.
    They must also, at every Station where the
    Train stops, ascertain that the loading of the
    Trucks has not moved, and especially that it
    does not overhang the sides.

  5. Brakesmen are to make themselves
    acquainted with the time of the Passenger
    and Fast Goods Trains; and when likely to
    be overtaken, will instruct the Engine-driver
    immediately to shunt into a siding, out of the
    way of the approaching Train, and in passing,
    warn the Signalman of their intention.

  6. Brakesmen are to be careful to ascertain
    that the Axles of the Wagons are properly
    greased or oiled before starting from a Station,
    and that the Van Brake is in good order.

  7. Brakesmen must have in their Van a
    few spare Chains or Hooks and Pins, a Crow-
    bar, Fire-bucket and Rope, Hand, Side, and
    Tail Lamps, also a Red Flag and a White one,
    and a copy of the Working Time Tables.

  8. Brakesmen are always to be careful in
    getting between Wagons to uncouple them,
    and are not to do so while the Train is in
    motion.

  9. Particular attention is called to the
    arrival at and departure from Junctions.

  10. All complaints or remarks concerning
    Defective Couplings, Carriages, Defect in Tele-
    graph, or anything whatever, must be made
    on the back of the running Time Sheet. Any-
    thing of importance, however, must be com-
    municated immediately in the usual way.

  11. The Guard and Brakesman are to
    report at once any case of the Driver going
    quickly through Points or over Turntables.

  12. Both Guard and Brakesman must pay
    particular attention to the Carriages, and see
    that they are always kept clean. Disregard of
    this Rule will be punished.

  13. The attention of Guards and Brakes-
    men is particularly called to the Special Rules
    for working that portion of the line on which
    they are employed.

PLATELAYERS AND OTHERS.

  1. In every gang of Platelayers, or men
    repairing the permanent way, there must be a
    Ganger or Foreman ; and the Manager shall
    take care that every such Foreman or Ganger
    shall be provided with a copy of these Regu-
    lations, and with accurate Gauges for gauging
    the Line, and with the proper Signal Flags
    and Lamps.

  2. Every Inspector or Foreman of Per- List of

    in case of accident, he may be enabled to sum-
    mon them immediately to assist in any way
    that may be deemed necessary; and should any
    obstruction take place, caused by snow, frosts,
    slips, or other sudden emergency, he is instantly
    to collect the required strength to overcome
    the obstacle.

  3. Every Foreman or Ganger shall con- Ganger to

  4. Every Foreman or Ganger is to see that Examina-

    sons, sober, and attentive to their duty. He
    must ascertain that they are conversant with
    their orders, and that the Points are in good
    working order, cleaned and oiled, and report to
    the Manager any irregularity he may detect.

  5. When the Trains are required to slacken Line under
    speed over any portion of the Line in conse- repair.
    quence of the Road being out of order or under
    slight repairs, a Green Flag by day and Green
    Light after dark or in foggy weather, must be
    exhibited at a thousand yards back from the
    place over which the Train is required to pass
    at a slow speed. When repairing a Line, so as
    to make it necessary for the Train to proceed
    cautiously, the Foreman or Ganger shall send a
    man a quarter of a mile to meet it, and exhibit
    the Caution Signal so as to be plainly visible to
    the Driver of the approaching Train.

  6. In the event of any Engineman neglect- Report
    ing to comply with the signal to "Stop" or to inattention
    "Proceed Cautiously" (as the case may be), to signals.

    order that proper notice may be taken of it.

  7. All broken Rails, Sleepers, or other de- Broken
    fective materials shall be removed from the Rails, &c.
    Road with the least possible delay, and sound
    materials substituted, and the broken parts sent
    in as soon as possible to Chief Depôt. In case
    of any defect of a dangerous nature, it must
    be immediately remedied.

  8. Each Foreman or Ganger must walk Ganger to
    over his length every Morning and Evening on walk over
    week days, and once every Sunday, and tighten Line.

    must examine the line, level, and gauge of the
    read, and the state of the joints-marking, and,
    if necessary, repairing, such as may be defec- tive. He must also carefully examine the Examine
    Points, Crossings, three throws, and Wire Points, &c.
    Signals, and see that they act properly.

  9. Each Foreman or Ganger will be held Ganger

    clear and safe, and the Fences in repair; and for Line.

    Sheep, Cattle, or other animals straying within
    the Fences or on the Line.

  10. Each Ganger must provide himself with To have
